My desktop, start menu, and most all folder icons are missing, faded, or corrupted. I have deleted my shelliconcache but it doesn't help.

Sounds like your shell32.dll file needs changing. If you can get to Start>Run , and
type msconfig , go to File Extract and type: shell32.dll in the window. Press enter.
On the top line look for C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS , and on the bottom line look for:
C:\WINDOW\SYSTEM , and click OK.

When asked if you want to keep the backup file in C:\WINDOWS\MSConfig\Backups , answer
Yes.

When complete you will be asked to reboot the computer.

If you can't get to the Run window then, with a Windows Bootdiskette, boot to DOS
choosing Minimum Boot to get you to the A:\> prompt and type:

A:\>EXTRACT C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS shell32.dll /l C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

(That is a lower case L in the /l switch.)

... and press Enter. Answer Y if asked to do so. Reboot.

I hope that this clears up the problem for you.

Thank you Mac, I will try it out. The only thing that was different was that when asked if I wanted to save it in C:\WINDOWS\MSConfig\Backups, I had to create this folder as it didn't exist

I hope it works out for you. I seem to remember that the folder is self creating
on the first occasion of use. I might be wrong though.

The fixes work for a while, then the icons become corrupted again and I have to apply the repairs again. IE, deleting shelliconcache, changing icon size, etc. Would the problem have anything to do with the PCI ATM Controller, as I am having problems with this also.

Try taking a look at this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer

In the right-hand pane it should read: MaxCachedIcons 0x00001000 (4096)

If you click on the Icon you should see a hexadecimal value of 1000.

Have you run an on-line anti-virus scan and are you keeping track of SpyWare Trojans?

I use AdAware SpyBot & SpywareBlaster to keep the system clean.
