A010****.CPY files in _RESTORE\TEMP

Does anyone know what is up with all of the A010****.CPY files in the _RESTORE\TEMP
directory? I know they have something to do with SYSTEM RESTORE, but I disabled SYSTYEM
RESTORE, rebooted, enabled SYSTEM RESTORE again, lowered SYSTEM RESTORE disk space,
rebooted and all _RESTORE\TEMP files were gone. Now the are back again, all 34,487
of them. Where do they come from?? What good are they?? There appear to be 11 of
them for every minute of the day. Can anyone help?? Thanks.

Mike, It is most likely a virus. If you have a bootdisk>shutdown the computer>insert
the bootdisk(some call it a startup disk,it floppy diskette)>restart the computer>
choose(3.) without cd-rom support>at the A:\ prompt that appears type " deltree C:\_RESTORE
" without the quotes, then press enter. Remove the diskette and press ctrl, alt, delete
to return to windows. If you have an antivirus be sure to remove restore from the
exclusions list before you delete it. If you need a bootdisk you can make one an
any ME computer. You'll need one diskette>go to control panel>add/remove programs>startup
disk tab>insert diskette into a: drive>create disk. Or go to Bootdisk.com
( I use the oem version)>download it to your desktop>open it >copy it to a diskette. You
should run a virus scan. If you don't have one you can get a free online scan at

JABuck, Thanks for the reply. I made a boot disk and started from it. I did the "deltree
C:\_RESTORE" and it ran for hours. I finally stopped it and rebooted normally. I
looked at the _RESTORE/TEMP file again and it was down a little(from 34,000+ to 27,000+).
Does this sound normal? At this rate it would take days to clear everytning. Also,
what did you mean when you said "IF you have an antivirus be sure to remove restore
from the exclusions list before you delete it"? I have a corporate version of Norton
Antivirus, I looked and didn't see any "exclusions" parameters anywhere. Thanks again.

Tip: Boot from Window ME Startup diskette again. Then at the A:\ prompt, first
enter SMARTDRV to load the DOS disk cache program. Then try the DELTREE
C:\_RESTORE command again. It should run a lot faster with DOS disk cache enabled.
By chance, are you running AOL on that system? AOL has a number of work files
that it sometimes updates with "program trace" information, that just happens to
be files that get backed up into System Restore for every update.
It is not normal for these programs to remain and build up like that in the System
Restore area, unless there is a problem with *STATEMGR not running. Check the TASK
LIST and make sure it is running and that *STATEMGR is being started in the MSCONFIG
Startup list. Some Virus/Trojans try to kill the protection functions of StateMgr.
So it still sounds like you may have one. Try running HouseCall_AV as a backup check for
virus.

I checked the MSCONFIG startup list and *STATEMGR is there. But when I look at the
TASK LIST(cntl,alt,del)
I don't see it. Is is running under another name? Also, I can't get HOUSECALL to
run. I go to it and download, and get an ERROR CODE: 28 and then ERROR STRING: Generic
source network failure. Do you want to retry. I answer yes and it just keeps getting
the same error message. Also, I am not running AOL. I have run a scan with my Norton
Antivirus and it shows no viruses. I did get rid of the files by disabling Restore,
rebooting, enabling Restore, and rebooting again. I will try the SMARTDRV function
next time. Thanks for your help, If you have any other suggestions, I will be checking
this link. Mike
