Internet Explorer Error

Dell Computer Pentium III 192 MB RAM
When Windows ME boots, an alert comes up on the desktop saying there has been
a browser error and to click to restore my active desktop. OK, so I click and my
desktop is restored. Then in about 15 to 20 seconds an error dialog box appears
saying Internet Explorer has caused an error in the ~905371528.TMP file. If I close
this error dialog box, then the computer locks up. If I move the error dialog off
screen the computer will continue to run. I usually run AOL 9.0 which will work
fine until you quit from it. Then the computer locks up.
I thought I could fix this by repairing Internet Explorer. But here's the strange
thing, IE doesn't appear in the Add/Remove Programs list! So, I can't do anything
to repair it. It does not appear in the Program FIles list either.
I tried deleting the ~9053715278.TMP file, but the next time I booted the same
error came up with the same file name!
So, next I decided to re-install Windows ME. I expected that this would install
a clean copy of IE 5.5 and I'd be home free. WRONG! Exactly the same problem occurred
with the same file name.
Can anyone give me a clue as to what the problem is here????
My next step is to try installing IE 6.0 but this is a dial-up connection so
it will take quite a while.

first I'd remove whatever picture you have as background, also your screensaver,
then disable active desktop. right click on the desktop, "show web content" should
NOT be checked. reboot and maybe nothing will ask for the active desktop. otherwise
see what is set to run at startup.
to download ie 6 you can do it all at once and put it on later. that way you can
set to download late at night when you won't need the phone. your isp will probably
boot you off the net 15 minutes after the download is finished. or if you know someone
with broadband who will burn it to a cd for you that would help.

Thanks. Disabling active desktop solved that problem. No one was using it anyhow.
But the Internet Explorer error just won't go away! First I got IE 5.5 SP2 and
installed it. But the same error occurred. IE did show up in the Add/Remove Programs
list when it hadn't previously.
Next I updated to IE 6.0 from the Microsoft Security Update CD (Feb 2004). I
also installed all of the Windows ME security updates while I was at it. The same
problem still occurs! I have booted to DOS and deleted the ~9053715278.TMP file.
But the next time I boot up IE will give the same error after about 20 or 30 seconds.
The file name is always the same. The file date/time is always consistent with
the last boot. So, for some reason IE is trying to create this TMP file and errors
out everytime. The file size is about 72 KB.
It has me baffled!!!

some ideas, don't know if any will work--
look in add\remove programs to see if there's anything there that shouldn't be.
for example, newnet is a program that sometimes comes back after using a spyware
cleaner. also from start, run, msconfig, startup it will show up as being checked.
uncheck it or note anything you think you don't need and look on the net to see
what it is.
also do a search to find the file called host. right click and click properties
to check each one. one or more will be from 2000, a windows file. a couple more
will be from spybot, those are okay. any that are suspicious, such as having a date
when the trouble started, rename to something like host5. then if they are needed
you can rename them back.
and did try disabling system restore to see if that helped? that lets loose of everything
being held there and you can enable it again.
