Windows ME registry problem

Hi,
I need to somehow fix my windows ME registry through DOS, as, because of a registry
error, I can't access my desktop. Safe mode won't work, neither will scanreg (and
scandisk stops working halfway through). I've run f-prot, but it can find no viruses.
What do I do? Where do I go? Is there a download that will save me. Please help.

Hi Robert,
You could try typing Sacnreg /fix from DOS to fix your registry. don't forget
to put the space between Scanreg and /fix.

Are you accessing DOS via a boot disk?

Free MS Update CD
You can put Delindex.bat onto your bootdisk and run it from the DOS prompt:
A:\>delindex run
And press Enter.
Then try running: A:\>scandisk /all ... again.
You would be surprised how a simple thing like that can ... sometimes ... make a
difference.

You may have a problem with the disk drive itself. From your Windows ME boot diskette
(DOS), run SCANDISK C: and then let it run a thorough scan of the disk drive.
It may take a long time. If it stalls at some points, then you know there are disk
errors that it is trying to correct. Be aware, that if it can not correct these disk
errors and save the data, it just fills in zeros for the lost data. This could have
caused your registry corruption in the first place.
Once you have ran a full SCANDISK C: then try doing the SCANREG /RESTORE again.

scanreg, scandisk - neither of them work. I will try that delindex.bat, but I think
my harddrive is almost dead. Today I have gone to a friends house, plugged in my
c drive into his computer, and I'm slowly rescuing all my files. The hard drive is
so fragile, prone to disappearing and having to restart, that it can't handle burning
straight off onto CD, so I have to copy file-by-file onto his drive, then burn off
onto CD from there.
One question - I need to get my outlook express emails and address book, but where
are they held?
