Linksys WLAN Monitor access

I have a Linksys WPC54G wireless network adapter installed in each of two Dell laptops
(Insp 8000 and 3800), both running Windows ME. On the 8000 the WLAN Monitor icon
does not appear in the system tray and cannot be accessed in the Start menu (although
it shows) until 1-2 hours after bootup. Yet the adapter works fine. Any suggestion
where to start looking?
