mmsystem.dll goes in the c:\windows\system folder. you can find a place to download it from the net. but you probably don't have the driver for your video card set up. right click on the desktop, click properties, settings, advanced, adaptor. if it doesn't list the video card but only a standard driver you'll have to get the video card driver and put it on your computer unless you have it on a cd or a floppy. then go back where you were and click change, you can try having windows look for it but you may have to browse and find the folder it's in. when you boot your computer the name of the video card should be the first thing you see on the black screen. should be a name, like SIS, and a number like 300. then you can search google for (example) driver for video card SIS 300. when that's done, see if you still get the error message. Good luck!

whether the computer has an on-board video card or a separate card in a pci slot, it needs a driver. the cd that came with the motherboard should have the driver on it. often there will be more than one, for different versions of the card. that's why you need to try to read it on the screen on boot up, so you can install the correct driver. put the cd in the computer, right click on the desktop, click properties, settings, advanced, adaptors, change then search for an updated driver and see if windows can find it.

Try downloading Everest, it should be able to identify your
display adaptor & point you in the right direction for drivers........

Andy,

The PCI communication device is probably your modem,
you need to install drivers for this too, again Everest should
be able to identify it for you.

upgrading the bios is for experienced users, better not do that yet. did you find drivers for your modem and video card? when you go to my computer, control panel, system, device manager, does it show your modem? so that you can change the driver once you have one.

As Donna said, don't worry about upgrading your BIOS,

do you have any other disks for your pc? it sounds like you need
motherboard/chipset drivers also, if you have driver disks laying around
it could save you a lot of bother.

has Everest identified your display adaptor, sound card,
modem & network card?

Andy,

You didn't reply as to whether Everest had identified your devices......

e.g. for your display driver, look under Display->Windows video & see
what the device description is....often you will be provided with a link to
the manufacturers website to download drivers..

Ok Andy, I'll give it a go....

Open Everest, click on the report button at the top,
choose system summary only->plain text.

When you've got the report there, click on my name at
the top of this message & you will be given an option to
email me directly..
copy & paste the report into the message, but bear with me,
I've gotta crash soon but I'll get back to you...
