still unable to download files

I am already sick to death of IE6. Even after setting the security settings to medium
and then low it will not even allow my home page to completely load according to
some privacy report icon. Even though I designated always allow at this site it
blocks it from completely loading so the globe icon just keeps churning.
I have looked and checked every box I can find in Internet settings and still no
luck.
Anyone?

It's unsafe to use IE anyway. Use another browser.
I have been using Firefox for a couple weeks, and find
it works good enough. Millions of computers this last
month have downloaded trojans from infected web sites.
I spent 4 hours last night disinfecting a friends computer.
When done he could at least get on line without being
redirected someplace, but I doubt we found all the spyware. I had to use all the
well posted, tools. Updated
versions of Spybot, Adaware, CWshreader, Ran DELINDEX from boot floppy, to delete
all the hidden dat files. Deleted all the Cookies, and Temp internet files. Ran
3 online virus scans, at Panda, Trend, BitDefender, had to visit some AV sites to
get manual removal instructions
for a couple trojans that Anti Virus software couldn't remove. When done I installed
Firefox, and Spyblaster
for the folks I was helping, to help prevent some future
problems, but the internet is a crap shoot now.

have you ran a spyware scan latley? is that the only thing wrong that you can tell?
try walking through this list if you haven't, it MAY be spyware or trojan that is
messing up your ie, personally, i would look to downloading mozilla and staying away
from ie all together, there is a link to it on annoyances home page, but try this
as well, good luck, and oh yeah, don't post a hijack this log until permission is
granted, because there could be an easier way to resolve this...;)

Steve, I am ready to do that. Really I am past ready. BUT, I CAN'T DOWNLOAD!
: )
I guess I'll go to another computer and download and then transfer and install.
That is doable? Do you think I will then be able to download files?
I hope so.
Also I can't get shockwave to load the jigsaw puzzle either. I guess I'm too dependent
on my computer. : )
I did all those things. Spybot found a few things so did AdAware but didn't look
like anything lethal and I got let them clean up. I then did a definition update
and ran the Norton scan. Then did the one button checkup again. Everything checks
out ok according to all of the above except for a missing file in Microsoft Photo
Suite which I rarely use. WinDoctor couldn't fix it.
I had my browser hijacked a couple months ago but the swell people here helped me
eliminate it. I had been able to download all I wanted until after those Explorer
errors which Norton seems to have fixed but obviously not to my satisfaction. I
am about ready to reinstall Windows and NOT update anything. I did that late last
year and was peachy until the hijack.
I am definitely going to try a new browser. I had always preferred Netscape but
quit using it when so many sites weren't compatible.
Thanks again

Try the Browser Firefox.92, some web sites will only work with IE, so you need to
have it around for use from time to time. If more people start using other browsers
web sites will work on getting compatable.
The computer I worked on last night couldn't even get
to any web site other then the one the malware would
direct it to, so I went over with a CDR with some of the
spyware romoval tools on it. If you don't have the lastest
version of Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3, and Adaware 6, and CWshreader 1.59. Get
them. Also before you start
delete all the temp internet files, I went a step further and
booted to a boot floppy and used DELINDEX command to
delete other hidden dat files, that seemed to help. Google
will help you with info on that if you want to look it up.
After that I was able to get on line so did the online virus scans, and they found
stuff the computers AV scanner missed. Some of the trojans had to be manually removed
by simple to follow instructions again obtained from Google searches. At last ran
a Hijack this log, and I told
them to post the log at one of the forums like spywareinfo.com. At this point it
was past everyones
bedtime, and I'm not great at deciphering the logs anyway. Once you have the computer
cleaned up download some of the preventive software like Spywareblaster. Using Firefox
or another browser will also
help, because IE Holes are now being exploited in a very destructive way, and
Microsoft seems unable to patch IE. MS came out last
week with a patch for a bad IE hole, and about 4 days later
it was discovered the patch really didn't work well. So I
have lost faith that even the patches to IE are going to
really help.

it seems to me a clean install would be a good thing, if you can save your data first
onto cd's or another computer. and saving now wold be wise in case things get worse!
or if your hard drive is partitioned you can move files there. did you try clicking
default for your settings in ie? that's where mine are.
you can download firefox www.mozilla.org on another computer and burn it to a cd
and see what happens. or if you have one, a usb memory card or flash drive is great
to use.
here's what I do--I have Norton ghost so when my computer is set up to please me
I ghost c:, the operating partition, to another partion on my drive. then burn it
to a bootable cd. if you have Norton ghost all you need is the ghost.exe file from
the cd, you don't have to install it. put it on a floppy to run in dos after booting
with a winme 98 boot disk, or a bootable cd. there may be a free ghost program on
the net, too. and personally other than that I'd get rid of Norton. I've used avg
free for years, it doesn't bog down the computer, has got the very few viruses or
email worms that have happened by way. and spywareblaster keeps other critters off.
post if you need more info about ghosting or anything. and let us know what happens.
