"there are three of these files (MFC42.DLL) in the C:\Windows\System folder"??? Impossible. They would each have to have a different name, unless your file system is totally corrupt and you have not ran ScanDisk to correct it.

You should only have one copy of MFC42.DLL installed on the system and it should be in the C:\Windows\System folder and have the default Windows ME date of 06-08-2000. If you have something different, it is most likely from a virus or Adware/Spyware infection, or from a bad install of a back-level program.

You can EXTRACT a clean copy of MFC42.DLL and place it in the C:\Windows\System folder by browsing to C:\Windows\Options\Install\WIN_12.CAB archive, locate MFC42.DLL, right click on it and select the EXTRACT option.
