Missing .DLL file - do I need an emergency boot disk? Help!

i tried to download a newer version of Internet Explorer on my 4 year old desktop
and somehow I corrupted/deleted a required .DLL file - now I can't even get into
windows. I get a message saying "required .DLL file : C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\COMCTL32.DLL
NOT FOUND" - and then I get a blank screen. I tried rebooting into Safe Mode, but
same thing happened. I hear I might need to create an emergency boot disk - can
I do that on my laptop that has XP? Can anyone help?? Thanks!

go back a few messages to one posted on Thursday
"Can't get pass explorer.exe error message"
for the boot disk, you can download one from your laptop at http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
save it to disk (to a folder) then put a floppy in the a drive, find the file and
double click it.

Maybe try this

You might try this:
Use your favorite search engine to see if you can find and download COMCTL32.DLL
on your laptop . Put it on a floppy. Boot your desktop to a command prompt only
(F8 during the boot process). Put in the floppy. then:
A: enter
at the A: prompt,
copy A:\COMCTL32.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
Remove the floppy after the copy is completed (no activity on the drive light for
the a drive). Reboot the pc.
Should work, if there is no further corruption.
Take care
Don
