Did you try running the Internet Connection Wizard and telling it you have an ISP and are using a network connection. You can not connect to the internet until the Internet Connection Wizard has been ran at least one time. Does not hurt to run it again.

When you run winipcfg, click the more info button. Does it show valid IP address from you ISP for the DNS Servers. You will get no where without these being picked up. Can you ping the DNS server IP address? If you can ping the DNS Servers OK, but not get URL resolution from them, your ISP's DNS servers might not be recognizing you yet. (security)

Try pinging your own IP address. You should get a response from the modem.

Try powering off your modem for at least an hour. Then power on the modem by itself. Wait several minutes for it to sync up. Then power on your system and see if you can connect or logon.

Are you logging on to your ISP with the correct userID and Password for your new connection (assuming it is a PPPoE connection).

Can you connect with a dial-up connection from the same computer? That would tell you the TCP/IP networking and WinSock software is set up and working.

Check the network properties in Control Panel. There should be a TCP/IP --> (your Ethernet network card) Connection defined. Its properties should show "Obtain an IP address automatically".

Have you called your new ISP and asked them to check your connection state. There can often be a delay in activating your service.

Without known all these details, there is no logical way to offer additional suggestions. ("playing around with the settings" does not tell us much!)

Thank you jack for responding to my query. I am sorry for replying so late and for
not giving complete details earleir.

Let me mention right at the beginning that I have tried using the connection on another
laptop and its working fine so the problem can be narrowed down to my laptop or my
D-link DFE-690TXD external Lan card.
Just last week I had subscribed to an ISP (Iqara) which used PPP over Ethernet technology
(WinPoet) and that was/is working fine. I am using the same Lan card for both the
connections. The second connection (BSES) does'nt require me to enter a username/password.
It just connects automatically when I switch on the laptop something like a conventional
Ethernet Lan.

I have run the Internet connection Wizard once before.
I cannot ping the DNS servers. Yes I can ping my own IP address and do get a quick
response. I have tried switching off the modem/restarting the laptop etc but it does'nt
help.

I can connect with a normal Dial-up connection and that is working fine implying
that TCP/IP networking and WinSock software is set up and working.

Checked the netnetwork properties in Control Panel. There is a TCP/IP --> (My Ethernet
network card) Connection defined. Its properties does show "Obtain an IP address
automatically".

I have called my Isp. As I mentioned earlier it is working on their laptop. Their
response is

1.My laptop has a virus: I have thoroughly scanned my hard disk atleast a dozen times.
I did find Beagle and Bugbear but could they prevent me from logging on to the net.
My dial-up connection was working smoothly even when my laptop was infected. In any
case I have gotten rid of them and now there is no trace of any virus.

2. There is something wrong with my Lan card: Well I was using the PPPoE connection
(Iqara) and can still use it. So that means my lan card is fine ....does'nt it?

Any suggestions are welcome......Thank you.
