Spybot failure

Spybot gives the message "DSO exploit Registry change" HKEY_Users\Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current version\Internet settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3 Although Spybot claims to have fixed the problem, it fails to do so repeatedly. I cannot find an ME cure for this, and I believe this to be the cause of the non running of Scandisk and Defrag. It is driving me crazy, Please help. Ray.

Spybot has a known bug in reporting the DSO Exploit. I would suggest to just set Spybot up to ignore and, not report the exploit if it is driving you crazy.

download DSOStop.exe to stop the exploits, at least most of them, there is also info on that page about it, also, on the soon to be realeased newer version of spybot, it will be fixed.

The exploit isn't a bug, but the fact that Spybot S&D "sees" the vulnerability incorrectly,
is. "DSO exploit is a data source object exploit, a security hole in IE that can
allow websites to execute code without your knowledge."

You can either exclude it from the scans, or you can fix it, if you're comfortable
using the registry editor. The DSOStop2 will do it, also.

Thank you all for your help. If this "Bug" is harmless I will ignore it. Why does my defrag and scandisc go into a loop except in Safe Mode? This started at the same time that I found the "Bug". (After a reformat of the HD.)

The 'bug' in how Spybot sees that exploit, is harmless, but that doesn't change the fact, the vulnerability exists on your system. In fact, Windows updates should take care of it, but DSOStop will remove the vulnerability. It's still a security issue, but it's not the Spybot programmer's responsibity to fix IE exploits.

Spybot's resident "Teatimer" blocks scandisk and defrag. Here's a workaround: Open Spybot and go to the Tools/Resident menu. Uncheck Teatimer. Close Spybot. Now you can run scandisk and/or defrag. Afterward if you want to you can reopen Spybot and reinstate Teatimer (which I think is a good idea because it will warn you anytime anything tries to change your registry.)
