Windows ME and NTFS

I am trying to solve a problem that has many tenticles. The best way to summerise
it is to paste a recent email that has not been sent.
Email:
Dear Support,
To introduce this problem I must relate the history.
I am running Windows ME on a Celeron 766 with 512MB RAM and 10GB HD. I currently
have about 1.5 GB free space.
I had automatic updates notification installed. One update was for Windows Media
Player 9. Once installed, my computer started having considerable problems. The most
sever was that my system restore did not work.
Working with the help of your support, I was given advice on many changes but none
worked to solve the problem.
After many months, I learned via other technical support geeks, that MS had issued
a faulty update program and my problems were symptomatic of the bug. The only solution
was to reformat and reinstalled the complete operating system. I reformatted my HD
and re-installed most of my programs
An age-old problem was that my computer would crash, especially when running Word.
Another is I would not be able to print to my laser printer via LPT1 as the data
kept getting corrupted.
It has been suggested that if my HD were formatted to NTFS instead of FAT32, I would
have less problems. Also, I now find that under “msconfig”, I am unable to change
from selective startup to normal startup. Too, I am unable to change anything there.
I have ran “scanreg /fix” many times but to no avail.
Now my problem is how can I convert to NTFS. Searching my system, I am unable to
find the program. Too, I believe that following the installation of the WMP9 patch
but not having installed WMP9, I may have cause more problems.
I have looked for the program convert.exe but it is not on my system. Is it located
in a CAB file? Will this program work under Windows ME?
Can you help? What do you suggest? I sincerely hope that this is resolved in a short
time unlike the last problem.
Too, please tell me why during the previously mentioned problem I was never told
by Microsoft support that my installing a faulty program from Microsoft was the cause?
Regards,
Steph

Windows ME can not run/install on a NTFS (NT File System) harddrive only FAT32 (File
Allocation Table 32).
Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP can run/install on a NTFS harddrive.

EMERGENCY BOOT DISK FREEWARE
ME will not run on NTFS file tables. You need about 15% free-space to run a hard
drive successfully and you only have 15% left over, so you are at the limit.
How big is your hidden C:\_RESTORE Folder? This folder can take up a lot of space
if it is not managed frequently.
What protective software are you using in terms of Anti-Virus program, Firewall,
and Anti-Trojan programs?
I use AVG Free Edition Anti-Virus, Zone Alarm Free firewall, SpyBot SD, AdAware SE
& SpywareBlaster, all freeware.
Do you have an ME Bootdiskette. If not then make one in Add-Remove programs, Start-Up
Disk. Then go to www.burzurq.com, download Delindex.bat and copy the file to your
bootdiskette.
Start the computer with the bootdiskette in the A: drive, choose Minimal boot and,
at te prompt, type:
A:\>delindex run , and press Enter.
You will see a read out of the free space increase before and after running Delindex
and all of your index.dat files will have been replaced by new ones.
Then reduce the System Restore cache by typing:
A:\>DELTREE C:\_RESTORE , press Enter and answer Yes to deleting the sub-folders.
Now type: A:\>scandisk /all /surface and press Enter to run a full drive scan.
When complete remove the bootdisk and press Ctrl+Alt+Del to re-boot the system, and
run defrag.
Check the amount of free space on the drive, and if you will, post back and say what
it is.

Thanks MAC,
The info was quite helpful. I am no longer pulling my hair out trying to work out
why i do not have a "convert.exe" on my system or installation disk. Funny, but I
even asked Microsoft support the question and they could not tell me the answer.
Using Delindex did not give me much more space but deltree c:\_restore did!!
It did not solve any of the problems i had though.
I normally use Norton AV and some other anti spam/spy software to try to keep my
system clean.
Ultra WinClean 2000 is an old program that I used to use on my Windows 98 se. I have
been using it to good effect in ME.
I seem to have cleared one problem by suing the systems own file and deleting a program
directory. Using HP psc2100 series printers i have the software installed for it.
It has never really work correctly.
Scanning through my startup under the help and support tool i found that these programs
were still being accessed after they were uninstalled. So I have deleted the entire
directory.
Back to Ultra WinClean 2000, I was able to remove all the links to the program and
I no longer have the problem of being unable to shut down my system without the error
message "this program is not responding".
I am still left with an ANNOYING problem. On startup, i get an error message, "this
application is already running". It refers to the application called indicator. I
do not now why as yet but I may post a new discussion topic about this.
Thanks again.

EMERGENCY BOOT DISK FREEWARE
My pleasure Stephan, thank you for your kind reply. I am now using XP Professional
and much happier than I was when using ME. I found ME to be far to maintenance intensive
and lacking in system resources.
If your computer is XP compatible I can certainly recommend the change.

Great for you.
Thanks for the advice. I also run XP Pro on my other laptop but I like playing with
ME because of the nostalgia really.
Cheers
