File Menu dialog box always defaults to second column

When I use File Open in a program, the dialog box which comes up showing the lists of files always appears so that the left hand column of files is already scrolled off to the left. However many files are in the relevant folder, the dialog box only ever scrolls one column to the right. It is very annoying having to always click the scroll bar to move to the left to see the files which are first alphabetically. Can anybody please explain why this is happening and how I can fix it? My system is Windows ME.

Default settings for opening that type of window must have been changed. You could try opening it, scrolling the bar over to where you want it, adjusting the window size, etc. and then press and hold the "Ctrl" key and click on the upper right X to close the window. For some windows, this will save the current settings as the default. Worth a try.

Thank you for the suggestion. I gave it (and a few similar variants) a try, unfortunately with no success. Any other ideas, please, anyone? Is it something that may be stored in a registry setting somewhere perhaps?
