'Suspend' option vanished!!!

When I had finished a task yesterday, instead of chosing the 'suspend' option,I chose the 'sleep' option instead, when closing down for a while.I was very surprised later to see that the 'suspend option was no longer even available; in fact it had vanished into thin air! Any ideas anyone? (I hope that 'suspend' and 'sleep' are the same terms in English configured computers!!) Many thanks in advance

'Correct terms for 'Suspend' option and 'sleep'.

Correction: I have now seen that 'standby' and 'hibernation' are the correct terms in English for 'suspended' and 'sleep'.....So, I will ask my question again: I put my p.c. in hibernation rather than in standby and now the standby option has simply vanished into thin air!! Any ideas anyone? Many thanks.

OK, with the common US version terms making it understandable.

First, unless you have a laptop system that has good BIOS, device driver and hardware support for both Suspend mode and Hibernation mode, you should not be using Hibernation mode with Windows ME, it is broken. And even with laptops, adding an adapter that does not have built in support will crash Hibernation mode.

For all but the "best" desktop systems with ALL of the hardware attachments supporting hibernate, with Windows ME it is recommended that you disable Hibernate mode (and take that option out of the Shutdown options). This is done through the Control Panel, Power Options properties. In the Hibernate tab, un-check the Enable hibernate support option.

Second, if the system has errors and fails to come out of either Hibernate or Suspend mode and you are required to power it off and back on to get it started, after several such events, Windows ME will let you know about it and then disable the option, taking it out of the Shutdown list. Usually you can enable it again by setting/resetting the options in the Power Options properties and rebooting the machine several times. There is additional information on doing this on the Microsoft web site.

Thank you so much Jack...I have actually tried that in the past, with no success, but I will try it again now and keep my fingers crossed!! Geraldine.
