Hi all, need your help if possible. When I click on my windows explorer all I get is a blank page with my documents off to the right. What did I screw up? I went directly to c:/windows explorer.exe and still get the same thing--no list of folders, drives, etc. on My computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kathy

Hello Kathy, try extracting a new copy of explorer.exe and putting it at C:\explorer.exe and then re-booting. If the old explorer.exe is corrupt that should fix it. You can then extract another explorer.exe to overwrite the old one, and then delete the C:\explorer.exe in DOS from a bootdiskette. A:\>DEL C:\explorer.exe , and press Enter.

I did exactly as you instructed Mac...still does not work. Any other ideas? This is driving me nuts..it probably is something simple like a wrong setting or something. Kathy

Is the Window white or grey? If it is white, right-click the area where the title headers should appear and see if you get the list of file attributes to appear. Tick the ones you want. I am just guessing that someone has unticked them all as a prank, and then slid the spacing over to hide the folders as well. Probably applied this same view to all folders too. If it is grey then this might apply: The problem of the Grayed out Explorer Folders Pane has been traced to a single registry key. This one: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32 The Default value for this key points to the file which builds the Explorer Band. That file is either Shdocvw.dll or Browseui.dll. The file varies according to which version of Internet Explorer is installed. If this entry is not correct, the Pane will not be built. Internet Explorer 5.5 uses Browseui.dll All other Internet Explorer Versions use Shdocvw.dll Using a registry file and merging that file into the registry can repair the problem on all versions except IE 5.5. ------------------------------------------------ For All Internet Explorer versions EXCEPT IE 5.5 Go to Start>run and type Regedit. Press Enter Navigate to this key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32 Highlight InProcServer32 in the left pane. In the right pane, double click on Default. Modify the value data in the box which will come up, by typing in the correct path to shdocvw.dll. Click Ok. Close the Registry. Or you can download a file and merge that into the Registry: There are two files, one for Win9x and ME, another for WinXP and Windows2000. This is because the path to shdocvw.dll is different in each operating system. And the Operating Systems use different registry value types. Download the appropriate file for your operating system. The files are attached as text files. Download the text file and rename it with a .reg extension. Double click the registry file to Merge into the registry. If you are running Windows 2000 or WindowsXP, the file attached here is correct for your Operating System. If you use Win 9x or ME, go to this link for the correct file: http://forums.techguy.org/t59067/sd...e4cb04f6b7.html ------------------------------------------------------- For those of you using Internet Explorer 5.5 Repair Internet Explorer. See if that corrects the situation. If not then doublecheck your installed version of Browseui.dll to be sure it is the correct version for IE 5.5. To cover all bases, (note: The registry usually doesn't solve the problem for IE 5.5) Go to this key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32 Click on InProcServer32 Make sure the Default in the right pane is the correct path to Browseui.dll. If none of this helps, you may either Upgrade Internet Explorer or revert to the previous version and/or try another reinstall of Internet Explorer 5.5. ME Users should ALL be using IE6 SP1 by now without problem.

Mac, did all the stuff with the registry..didn't work. Screwed up IE. I did reg/ restore. But now when I try to go to windows live update I get error 'Explorer has caused an error in MSHTML.dll and will now close'. Don't know whats up with that but when I went into regedit my default was Browseui.dll. But yet it says I am running IE6.0 with update versions; SP1; Q330994; Q837009;Q834707 whatever the hell that means. I need help big time here. Could IE be screwed up because I am running AOL? PLEASE HELP. Kathy

The usual problem is that thee are different versions of MSHTML.DLL and the one in IE should be the one that is used for all versions running on the computer, as I remember. Do a search for MSHTML.DLL and change the older versions for the latest one.

Probably time to eradicate IE with IERadicator and do a fresh install. (Or just junk ME and try XP) I gave up on Norton altogether and now use AVG and stopped having problems. IE6.0 Download the IE6 SP1 Installer from the MAIN WINDOWS DOWNLOAD site MS DOWNLOADS Or the full program as mentioned in the link below. [Current version: 6.0.2800.1106] Then use Add-Remove programs to uninstall IE. If this proves to be unsatisfactory then use IEradicator to remove IE completely from your system and re-install after running scandisk & and defrag. Then fully update your system at the Windows Up-Date site for ALL system-critical and security up-dates: Windows Update SEE: INSTALLING IE6.0 SP1  RESPONSE WINDOWS UPDATE TROUBLESHOOTER You may have to re-install the Windows Installer here REDX

Mac, cannot re-download IE6.0 because every time i go there it kicks me off-line. Should I delete it from my system first, then re-install it? I also run Aol 9.0 and it uses IE 5.5. If I eradicate will it wipe that out as well? thx, Kathy

I would download IE6 to another computer (For YOUR language and for YOUR operating system) using the method below, burn it to a CD (Possibly a Mini-CD) and then Eradicate your IE5·5 and install IE6. I have to say that I know nothing about AOL as I use Skynet. NOTE: The file ie6setup.exe is specific to the operating system AND is ... ALSO ... language specific. You START by downloading ie6setup.exe for YOUR operating system & LANGUAGE into a C:\Download folder. (You can do this for other Operating Systems on other computers if you burn the entire program to a CD-R or CD-RW.) The C:\Download folder HAS to be opened to FULL screen before pasting the download command into the Run window. 1./ Download the IE6 SP1 Installer from the MAIN WINDOWS DOWNLOAD site: IE6 DOWNLOAD 2./ Choose the language which you require at the right side of the page. 3./ Download the installer (Approx. 480+Kb) into the C:\Download folder, and open the folder to FULL window. 4./ Go to Start> Run>: cut & paste this line into the Run window, then press OK C:\Download\ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E""" 5./ In the download window which appears, choose the operating system which you want to put IE6 SP1 onto and choose the: C:\DOWNLOAD path, in the top window, then press enter. All of the IE6 SP1 cabinet files will now download into this folder and you can then either install, or burn to CD. 6./ Remove your old IE completely from your system, either by uninstalling in Add-Remove programs, or by using: IEradicator, for a clean install of IE6 SP1 7./ Run scandisk & and defrag. 8./ Run ie6setup.exe to install IE6 SP1 to your system. 9./ Now fully update your system at the Windows Up-Date site for ALL system-critical and security up-dates: Windows Update 10./ NOTE: Just copy and paste the above line. Otherwise you can get the syntax wrong. 11./ In IE, Tools, IE Options, Advanced, & under "Navigation" Uncheck: "Activate install on demand" [Other] , and, "Activate install on demand" [Internet Explorer] In IE6 Tools, Options, General, set the History to the number you require then open Settings and set the Temporary Internet Files cache to 20Mb or less.
