Machine freezes on connecting to internet

Hi all, I am running on Windows ME and each time I connect to the internet my machine freezes - CPU usage goes up to 100%. I have looked at the Windows.ini and System.ini files but cannot see anything in those that might be causing this problem (e.g. backdoor.ciadoor.c which I read about on this forum). Another strange thing is that I cannot use my System restore utility to rollback my system settings further than about a month/month and a half. This is very unusual as I have often rolled my settings back 6 months using the Sytem restore utility. If anyone has any pointers on the best place to start looking for the cause of this problem I would appreciate it. John

Not being able to roll System Restore back very far is advisable because it does not save everything necessary to go back that far. That said, System Restore may be limited due to lack of unused space on the disk drive (now or some point several months ago). If you have done a lot of installs and un-installs recently, system restore will use up a lot of free disk space and start throwing away old restore points.

The system hanging when connecting to the Internet is often the sign of either corrupted Windows control files (system restore, automatic updates, etc.) or ADware/Spyware, virus, worms and/or Trojans. So you have to check for all of these types of problems.

See: Windows ME fixespage for a whole list of things to check for and do.
