Help Can't Start WIN ME Missing SHLWAPI.DLL

I am using win ME and after the password screen nothing happens, just a blank screen. I can't even go in safe mode and don't know how to boot in DOS mode either (not sure if u can do this in win ME) How this Happened- ran norton anti virus 2003, got message saying there was a change to boot record, the change was unexpected so clicked that. Next thing my computer locked up and can't get windows going since. Why did norton do this... I have no clue! Downloaded WIN ME boot disc, and tried to boot with the floppy but no luck, acts the same way regardless. Searcing for hours for answer to this problem but still have no answer how to get WIN ME running again, and without access to WIN or DOS I can't fix the problem. Restoring system with system recoveryfactory software is NOT an option as it wipes all my HD clean and I just can't do that. I am really hoping someone can help! That PC is my lifeline! Thanks!!!!!

do you have your ME installation disk? i believe you can extract it off of there, perhaps someone will come around to further advise you if this is possible or not, good luck.

I only have WIN ME on the system recovery software and like I mentioned it wipes the HD Clean. Can't do that. Is there some other way to repair this error. I am now able to access DOS mode, if I can do anything there, but I am not Sure what Norton AV did. Did it erase a line in the sys registry did it erase the SHLWAPI.DLL file, and isn't that an Iexplorer file anyway and not a win sys file? UGGGGHHH. This is tourture. Suggestions, explanations anything THANKS

Jenni, On the startup disk you will need to download it to the desktop>open it>copy it to a diskette. It usually don't just download to a diskette.

Then try restoring the registry first. To restore the registry shut down the computer>wait 10 seconds>insert the disk into a: drive>restart the computer. When it loads>choose without cd-rom support>at the a:>prompt type scanreg /restore (note space after scanreg)>enter>yes>choose a date before the problem begin>ok.Remove the startup disk from the a: drive and press ctrl, alt, delete simultaneously to return to windows.

If no luck try this second option which may retore the needed files. Restart the computer with the startup disk and at the a:> type sys c: (note the space after sys)>enter>then press ctrl, alt, delete to return to windows.

If neither of these work you may need to edit the system.ini file to get your computer up and running , but try these first. ---jabuck

With some help, I have my computer running. I was able to have a friend come help me and for reference I just want to share how we solved the problem. It took a few hours of fiddling to get to the simple solution He had a boot disk that would get the system to start in dos mode. Renamed the SHLWAPI.DLL to SHLWAPI.OLD. Then Copied a newer version from his laptop, XP SHLWAPI.DLL to the Windows/system folder and it worked! Note: I had tried to copy the file both from a 98 version and downloaded a ME version but neither worked. I don't know why the ME version didn't work but at least the XP did and that was it. :) :) :)!!!! Thanks for your help!!!!! I really appreciate it!!!!
