WindowsMe not recognizing dvd writer

I recently installed a BenQ dvd r-rw on my computer. However, the operating system doesn't recognize it as a dvd, but only as a CD-ROM. I've installed the Firmware driver from the BenQ website, but still not working. Does anyone know what i'm missing or what else should i do? Thanks for any help!!

Windows ME only recognizes such drives as CD-rom drives.

You have to install software packages that come with them, like Nero or ROXIO software that has drivers that support the DVD-RW functions. And you have to install DVD player software to play DVD. This usually comes with the drive also. Such software packages that come with drives usually only support the specific vendor drive it was shipped with. It get versions that support all drives, you have to buy the retail package software.
