retaining WP 5.1 for DOS with a Windows upgrade

It may be time to upgrade my old Windows 98 (first edition), and I'm trying to decide whether to choose 98 Second Edition, ME, or XP. My most important files are all in WP 5.1 for DOS, so I need to be able to continue to run this program without problems. Will all three Windows programs allow that? Any recommendations on which to upgrade to? I'm mainly interested in avoiding glitches and problems. I need no fancy applications; Windows 98 does everything I need and I like it, but I have difficulty opening Word attachments and need to get software (Word or Corel 12) that will help me there, and I've heard that Windows 98 First Edition is too primitive to support either of those. Recommendations?

WP 5.1 for DOS should be easy to backup and move. You just have to make sure its folder (WP51) and subdirectory are all copied to a CD-R or diskettes and that you have backed up any WP files saved in other folders. I have it running under Windows ME quite well. (I have done some work on a WP 5.1 video driver for newer video adapters and monitors in my spare time, but currently lack the hardware to finish the project.)

I have tried WP5.1 under XP Pro and did run into some minor video driver problems with video device drivers. The problems I saw were related to graphics display and may have been caused by the systems video adapter drivers, not WP's. So if you are considering switching to XP Home or XP Pro, I would recommend you copy your current WP51 folder to diskettes or CD-R and then find someone with a XP system who will allow you to copy the folder(s) onto their system as a test, and then see if your setup works as you expect.

What ever version you switch to, make sure you download and install the latest drivers for your video adapter.

If you run other DOS based applications, I would recommend using Windows ME, as XP does not really have DOS windows, just a Command Window that acts a little like DOS and allows some DOS programs to run.

More important is your system hardware. Does it have enough memory to run XP (256MB)? Or even Windows ME (128MB)? And is your disk drive big enough for either of these systems.

Hi Anne,
You should be able to open your WP51 DOS files in Windows versions of WordPerfect. I'm using Windows Me and WordPerfect Suite 8. My old WP51 files are in a separate folder and I can open and modify them and then save as either the original WP51 format or in version 8 format. BTW, both WP Office 11 and 12 feature a WordPerfect 5.1 Classic mode.

Regards,
Ron
