You should be able to extract a clean copy from the system CAB files. Go to the
folder C:\Windows\Options\Install and locate the file WIN_17.CAB and
open it. Then locate the compressed copy of RunDLL32.exe and right click it and select
the Extract option. For the destination folder, select C:\Windows
You can also do this with Start - RUN - MSCONFIG - OK - and clicking the "Extract
file..." button, and filling in the request information and using the Browse button.
The fact that it is missing and you are having problems getting into the Control
Panel suggest that you might have a virus or browser hijacker on your system as
several are known to delete the RunDLL32.exe file. So, first restore it and reboot.
So do a full virus scan. Then scans for ADware/Spyware and browser hijackers.

Hi Jack
I am running Windows 98, and tried to follow your instructions but I could not find
the WIN_17.CAB, I get the feeling a virus has removed the RunDLL32.exe from my computer
and it means I can't do alot. Any help would be much appreciated. Do you know where
I can get a new RunDLL32.exe file?
Many thanks
Rob

Obviously, the file wouldnt be located in the same CAB on 98 as it is in WinMe! If
you have problems, post a new message on the appropritate forum. Trying to follow
directions for a different OS, will get you nowhere.

Wouldn't an F3 (search) in Windows find the file?
Anyway, I felt I had to chip in here after reading several threads on this and other
forums about rundll32 having gone missing. A number of helpful people suggested
a variety of fixes, such as running msconfig, sfc and the like. Well..when rundll32
is missing, these commands don't work.

My rundll32.exe is located in C:\CABS\WIN_17.CAB. I extracted it to C:\WINDOWS and
everything works fine now.
