Running ME...My system is rendering my programs practically non functional. It keeps terminating any program that I'm using when I try to delete, maximize a window, spell check, etc...I can't get into add/delete programs, update window online, etc. I am receiving the following error: "An error has occurred, to continue press enter to return to windows or pres CTL+ALT+DEL to restart your computer. If you do this, you will lose any unsaved information in all open applications Error: OE : 0187 : BFF8E64B" Please help!

I assume this system was recently working without problems.

This type of problem usually means an infection with a virus, too many ADware/Spyware programs and Trojans and/or a Browser Hijacker. This could be a major learning experience trying to clean up your system yourself.

The first thing you need do is boot the system into Safe Mode to verify it is not a basic hardware problem. This restricted mode will allow you to run a few programs like System Tools - Disk CleanUp and your Anti-Virus scanner if you have one, but not access CD-Rom drives or the Internet (all in glorious 16 color mode).

To boot into Safe Mode, restart the system and before the initial Windows ME splash screen hold the left Ctrl key or F8 key down. This may take several tries, but you should get the Boot Menu. Select the Safe Mode option. When it finally stops, X out of the System Information Help window. Run Disk CleanUp just for a test. Then run SCANDISK for a test. If that works, try running a manual scan with your Anti-Virus program if you have one. You may want to go back to normal mode and update its definition files if it has not been updated recently.

Next you will have to download, install, update and run a whole list of spyware/ADware and Browser Hijacker scanners to try to fix most of the problems.

Before you start, you need to do a lot of reading about checking for and removing this type of Malware, cleaning up your system, doing Windows Updates and other security fixes for your system.

A good place to start is my Windows ME fixespage as it has all the links to information and programs that you will need. Read it from top to bottom to get an idea of all the different things you might need to do, and then start to work on the Removing Malware section first.

If your system is running so bad that you can not download and install programs, you might have to get STINGER.exe and CWShredder.exe downloaded on a working system, copy them to diskettes and then while booted in Safe Mode, run these two small programs from diskettes. If you don't have an Anti-Virus program installed and up to date. You might want to start with STINGER (a mini Anti-Virus scanner from McAfee) first as it is easy to download and run.

Jack, I ran the scandisk (thorough) and disk cleanup in safe mode. I also ran spot & lavasoft's ad-adware which allowed me to delete a lot of those files. I had to use my laptop to save the programs to a disk as I could not download them on the pc. I also ran a complete anivirus scan with norton...I also ran cwshreder...I am still experiencing the same problems....Someone suggested that it is a outlook or word 2000 issue. They recommended that I delete the Normal.dot and the shortcut to the recyling bin.

Deleting the Normal.Dot file would be a good idea as it is a common source of problems, and is know to cause this error if corrupted. Search your system for more than one copy of the file. WORD will rebuild it the next time you start WORD.

I hope that after installing SpyBot and Ad-Aware you were able to get on line and update their reference files. If not do that and run them again. You have only started the cleanup process.

There is a know problem with the Trident video adapter drivers causing this exact error message if they are back level. See: MS note. If you have that video adapter, downloading and updating to the latest video drivers might fix the problem.

I did update the SpyBot and Ad-Aware. I can't seem to find the "normal.dot" file. I did a search for the file under the local hard drive and only came up with a word file named normal. It was found in windows\application data\microsoft\templets. The file size is 741 kb. Is this the correct file? If so, does it matter if I delete it or rename it?....Also, the resolution recommended for the Visio 200 drawing. I can't complete the process. When I click on the "Adapter" tab (step c), it kills the screen and gives same OE error.
