Winword lockout blames GDI.EXE

Hello everyone. When I try to load Winword 2000 the splash screen freezes, I get a heavy resources message and then "Winword caused an invalid page fault in GDI.EXE..." with addresses. I have to reboot. I've done nothing new or different recently. Any ideas, please?

Thanks, Pappy, but it doesn't apply, I have WindowsME and I don't get as far as loading Word - the lockup occurs before loading. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Winword, and have tried System Restore to two previous dates with no success. Any more suggestions, please. I'm stuck!

By "loading", do you mean "Installing" or "starting"?

If you have changed nothing, then you may have picked up some virus or ADware/Spyware programs that are conflicting.

Also a corrupted user logon file (username.PWL) has been know to cause such errors.

See: Windows ME fixespage and start checking everything.

I mean 'running' Word by clicking on shortcut. Tried also starting the prog using Winword.exe from within Office folder. Shows Winword banner then hourglass and lockup. I have now run Antivirus and Scandisk, renamed .PWL file, run two adware progs, Spybot and AdAware, found two data miners. ME is always currently updated, last was media Player critical update. All other programs I have tried load and run. All suggestions welcome, please.

Success! I renamed the NORMAL.DOT files, rebooted and Bingo! Winword loaded. Every day a new experience and a long list of possible remedies. Thanks to all for help and advice.
