Boot-up problem, virus maybe?

Hi. For about the last month or so, my computer has been acting very strange. Everytime I boot up and try to go online, IE just says "Finding site" and it never comes up. So, I ctrl alt delete and go back to IE, and then I'm able to go online. I run AVG virus scanner, Spybot S&D, Ad Aware 6.0 and I have Spyware Blaster as well. I run all of these frequently and remove any viruses/spyware that these show. I have also done a complete scandisk and disk defragmentation. Non of this has helped. I've done online scans such as Panda and Trend Micro, they have found viruses and deleted them (to my knowledge), so I'm completely tapped out of ideas. Any help would be most greatly appreciated. Thank you, Amy.

I assume you have the latest IE security updates from the Windows Update site. I have seen a lot of hangs with IE with the last few IE updates, when it connects to a web site but it does not respond after the initial connection. So I assume your IE is trying to connect to some site that is not working right, because of either some sort of ToolBar (MSN, Yahoo, etc.) or a BHO file that is not being detected as Malware or that might be corrupted.

First remove any all BHO's. They should download again if you really need them. One way to do this is to run HijackThis and remove all O16 entries. For your problem, a better way is to run the System Tools - Disk CleanUp utility. On the second screen, make sure the box by "Downloaded Program Files" is checked. Then select the line (click on it) and then click on View files. This will give you a list of all the BHO (Browser Helper Objects) and files IE has downloaded and that become part of IE's extensions. Select each and all of these items by right clicking on them and manually deleting them. Then finish Disk CleanUp. Reboot, connect and see if IE's problem has been solved.

Next try a REPAIR of IE just in case it has a problem. To REPAIR IE 6.0, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove icon, and select (highlight) the entry for "Microsoft Internet Explorer ... and Internet Tools" and then click the Add/Remove button at the bottom of the window. On the options window, select the "Repair Internet Explorer" option and click OK. When it is done reboot the system and test.

If you have any such tool bars, you could try removing them (or at least disable them) and see if they are the problem and then reload them.
