Windows ME

I just got a used Windows ME installed computer for Christmas. I am not familiar with it, and needless to say I did not make a start up disk. I shut it down the other night, and when I returned it would not work. It goes to safe mode, now what do I do? any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, J.G.

Well, at least you can boot into Safe Mode. That is a good start. First thing you want to do while in Safe Mode, is run SCANDISK. Go to Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - and click on ScanDisk. First run it in Normal Mode and allow it to Automatically fix errors. When done, run it again in Thorough mode, this can take hours if you have a large disk dive.

This should check out and maybe fix any disk drive releated problems. But at this point, as it is a used system, we have no idea how it has been changed, or what you have installed on it.

Next manually run your Anti-Virus program (hope it has been updated recently) and any spyware/Adware scanning programs that are installed.

Spend some time reading through Windows ME fixespage and its links so you know a little bit more about troubleshooting Windows ME problems. (look at the Microsoft link for doing this).

Then if you can not get it to boot into normal mode, use MSCONFIG to set Diagnostic Startup mode and see if that works. It should allow you to start tracking down what has infected or damaged your system. Post back after you know a little more about what is wrong.

Thanks for your response. I ran the scandisk, which as you said, takes hours. It said I had no errors. I am unable to run a virus program. I had to shut down and on the safe mode it ran a scan disk. It says Help and Support Valid Options :lauch default page -reg server :register the application -unreg server :unregister server -Collect :exec. scheduled data collection -url navigate to a particular page Anymore suggestions would be gladly tried Thanks, J.G.

Try the following. Boot the system. Exit out of Help and System Information. Run ScanDisk in Normal Mode to clear any errors.

Then Start - RUN - MSCONFIG - OK.

Check that the "Normal startup" is selected. Click Apply and exit out and reboot system.

0 is listed in msconfig. I have ran all scans and they say there is no problem. I can only try things in safe mode, which is not a lot.

System config utility-the tabs are general system ini.. win.ini., static vxds, startp, environment, and international.. When I am in safe mode and go to program files it says empty. I can not get to restore either.

if you press ctr-alt-del keys all at once what if anything is

listed there? also look to see if there is a folder called

windows/options/cabs. if there is look in there to find a file

called setup.exe.

just look to see if it is there. dont do anything else.

can you boot to normal mode?

can you boot to safe mode?
