No Open Option on Desktop Folders or Control panel

I've been having a few BSOD's lately-which hadn't been my experience for the last two years; now when I click on folders, or My Computer, instead of a normal window opening, I get a search window. Plus, I can no longer open Control panel; I've been able to get it to display in a start menu type format, but not in a window. Sign me, quite confused.

It sounds like you have a Browse Hijacker that has infected IE and taken over your system. Most likely you now have a host of ADware, Spyware, Virus and Trojans on your machine also. It sounds like a verson of the CoolWebSearch browser hijacker.

Start by doing a manual scan of your Anti-Virus program if you can get it updated.

Read through Windows ME fixespage to get an idea of what you will have to do to get rid of most of the problems.

Nope; I have Ad-Aware; Spybot R&D; and Browser Hijack Blaster; AA and Spybot are
updated to the latest versions/definitions. I have a current and updated version
of CA EzTrust antivirus; I use ZoneAlarm firewall and I use Firefox 1.0 as my primary
browser; I also have Mozilla, Netscape, and Opera, as well as Explorer, of course;
all of my software is updated regularly and currently up to date.

Actually, that was my first suspicion; but I've scanned and checked-no virus, no
trojan, no worm, no hijacker. And I've read through the 'Me Fixes' page; plus, I've
owned my own copy of Windows Me Annoyances since it's been in print-which is why
I've had no previous problems, and why I'm somewhat bemused over this problem.

I don't rule out a piece of malware that I've been unable to detect; but it's not
looking like the source of the problem.Sorry I didn't make this clear in my original
post.

Thanks for the suggestion, though. Any other ideas?

Try running SCANDISK in Thorough mode. You could have picked up a soft disk error somewhere on the disk drive. They can cause BSOD type of errors. Normally this type of disk problem can be caused by power failures (which is why I have a UPS).

The other errors still sound like a Browser Hijacker. There might be a new one out. But I assume you have looked at a HijackThis log and found nothing new.

Keep us posted.

I guess I should provide more info on what I've done, or am doing; and on my hardware.

I've run scandisk in Thorough mode; I do that about once per month; I defrag weekly;
and I have a UPS (I'm an old Navy trained electronics tech; so I have a deep appreciation
for stable power sources; my basic computer is a Dell 4100, PIII, 1 gig; but with
a lot of upgrades, including a PC Power and Cooling 360 power supply).

The BSOD's seem to have stopped; but still no Open option-just search.

I haven't checked the Hijack This's log-I have Browser Hijack Blaster; I'll download
Hijack This, and see what comes up.

I suspect that, somehow, somewhere, I may have mistakenly or accidentally changed
a preference setting-but I don't know where; I've checked Folders and Options, and
haven't found anything that seems incorrect.

Any ideas on what settings I may have screwed up?

TIA-and for suggestions already given; if there is more system info that would help,
please let me know.

After reading over your postings several times, I am still confused as to what you are seeing, when you say "search". For example, with the My Computer, are you seeing a normal "My Computer" window with the Search pane open as if you have opened it and hit the "Search" option? Or maybe it is filling the whole window? Or is it giving you something like a search engine web page? Or is it a "Search Results" window, as if you had selected the Start - Search - "For Files and folder.." option.

On the Open Control panel, if I understand the details you left out, you are able to go to Settings -Taskbar and Startmenu, Advanced tab and check the box for "Expand Control Panel", and in this way see all of the entries in the Control panel through the Start Menu. But in the default configuration you are not able to Open the Control Panel window. If not, what happens. What do you get or see?

Try this. Move the mouse over the Control Panel entry in the startmenu so that it is highlighted and right click on it. Instead of Open, click on Explore. You should get a two pane Explorer style window for the Control Panel. If not, what happens or what do you see. A blank window? Any error message of any kind?

If you do a Start - RUN - SYSDM.CPL does it bring up the System Properties window?

If you have not already done it, try a REPAIR of IE. To REPAIR IE 6.0, go to Control Panel, Add/Remove icon, and select (highlight) the entry for "Microsoft Internet Explorer ... and Internet Tools" and then click the Add/Remove button at the bottom of the window. On the options window, select the "Repair Internet Explorer" option and click OK. When it is done reboot the system. This should check and replace a number of the common DLLs use by both IE and Explorer. It sounds like one of the main DLLs used by Explorer to Open windows has been corrupted. Worth a try at this point.

Hi Garry, et al - I seem to be having the same problem, but with Windows 2000. I click on desktop folders - that have opened beautifully for over a year - and get the same screen that comes up as if I'd clicked on "search" on the taskbar. This is new as of 2 days ago, so I may also have unknowingly changed something in preferences. TIA everyone, Joan
