Unless someone else comes along with a miracle fix, you'll need to create a WinME
startup diskette (boot disk). That's assuming you're running ME, since this is the
ME forum. Then do a repair/reinstall of ME. Follow Jack's instructions here, and
good luck to you:

Reinstall ME from CABS

If that's not possible, and you have a Recovery disk, follow the mfgr's. instsructions
to recover your system back to factory state (as it was, when you first got the system).
That would take you back to square one, though. All programs you've installed, and
all personal data, settings, etc. would be gone.

You're welcome. Although, I can't really help any more, than what Jack's step by step instructions tell you, I'm afraid.

Be sure to locate and write down your Product Key in advance. Do you know how to
locate it? I had thought the instructions were in that post. After reinstalling,
you'll likely need to upgrade or update IE, as 5.5 comes installed with ME. Then
you'll have an option to run IE's repair tool, if necessary.

I'm not the greatest one to help with reinstall issues, if something comes up. Someone
else may be able to, if you post back for further help, or you can start a new thread
with a link to this one, if you need to.

Glad you got it taken care of, and you're welcome. Were you able to resolve it without reinstalling ME? I'd be interested to know.

made a boot disk from bootdisk.com, then copied the ifshlp.sys file from a windows 98 program onto a floppy, booted the computer in with out cd help, removed the bootdisk at the A: prompt and replaced it with the floppy containing the file, copied the file into my system, sorry i cant remember the exact commands i used to do this but i am sure someone posted them here on this website about three years ago, and the computer started first go no probs. Took me about seven minutes in total to do something that a computer technician said couldnt be done. Thanks for the help everyone.

I'm having the same problem as damien. Somehow this file was corrupted on my system. I tried following the instructions suggested, but there weren't enough details and I am too computer illiterate to make it work. I made a startup disk from a computer currently running ME and booted up my computer (Dell Inspiron 8000) with the disk. I got to the menu and selected F5 to boot into Safe mode. When I got the A:\ prompt I typed what Jack suggested "C:\Windows\Options\Install" and it ran scandisk. However, an error occurred and it said it could not repair the disk. Any ideas?
