mcafee virus protection disables w/ game

OK, here's what happens: My son plays "Starcraft" on our computer and it disables
our McAfee viruscan and firewall, so we reload it afterwards. But today I found that
the McAfee stuff was again disabled so I pulled up the program on my desktop, which
normally activates the McAfee icon on the toolbar. I would then right-click that
icon and "enable" the viruscan and the firewall. However, today after pulling up
the McAfee program on the desktop, the icon appeared and would disappear as soon
as I moved the cursor on top of it; simultaneously, the McAfee window would disappear.
If I tried again, same thing happened.
Why is game disabling McAfee protection?
Why is McAfee not functioning properly now?
I restarted computer and it reloaded McAfee and I thought all would be well, but
same thing happens: McAfee icon eventually disappears from toolbar and won't behave
normally if I try to activate McAfee.
Help.

That sounds like a virus infection from any of a number of virus and Trojans that
can kill most Anti-virus programs when they start.
You can try booting into Safe Mode and then manually running a full virus scan
and see what it picks up.
You can also download
Stinger and run it to remove the most common recent
virus that do this. Then run the free On Line virus scan
HouseCall_AV for a second opinion.

Thanks for suggestions. I will try safe mode and virus scan first.

OK I'm not too savvy on computers, but I restarted in safe mode and I can't run a
virus scan because my McAfee viruscan is disabled and refuses to run. Every time
I pull up the program and try to use it, the window disappears. The icon appears
momentarily on my task bar but when I move the cursor over it, it disappears again.
How else do I run a virus scan if I can't use my virus program?

First, are you sure you are getting into Safe Mode. It should say so in each cornor
of the screen after you kill the System Information program.
Sounds worse than I expected. The installed virus scan could have been damaged
by the virus to prevent them running. Download the McAfee Stinger program (link in
prior note) and copy it to a diskette. Then run Stinger on the system directly from
the diskette. It should be able to remove enough virus programs so that you can boot
into safe mode and run his AV program.

I was definitely in safe mode when I attempted to run virus program. So now I just
finished running stinger and other program to find viruses. It found 22 trojans,
all of which were "noncleanable" as well as "cannotaccess" with respect to trying
to delete them because they were "in use"...all were files in archives...don't know
what to do now.
