Windows ME loads up and then starts to load explorer, but for some strange reason stops loading it and it just stays on the same screen with nothing on it (screen is the same colour as the desktop would be). It doesn't load the desktop or any other programs. I pressed ctrl + alt + del to see if any programs are loaded but there is nothing!! Please can anybody help me??.....

Try booting into Safe Mode and see if it boots that way. (Hold F8 or the Ctrl key down before the initial Windows ME splash screen, then select Safe Mode.) If it boots into Safe Mode, you know it is not anything wrong with Explorer.exe program, and it is most likely something wrong with one of the MSCONFIG Startup programs or a system driver. For example a virus may have infected your system and is crashing it.

If you can get into Safe Mode, first run System Tools - SCANDISK in normal mode, and then in Thorough mode (may take hours) to check the disk drive. Maybe run a manual virus scan and any other ADware/Spware scans that you have installed.

Then shutdown and try booting into normal mode again.

What you do next depends on what happens when trying to boot into Safe Mode and after running Scandisk.

I am having a similar problem. I have tried...

1) Normal startup - Result: Computer hangs on desktop (no icons appear). When I hit 
Ctrl-Alt-Delete,  the only program displayed is Cpiexe.

2) Startup in safe mode - Result: Same as above (some Help window opened on startup, 
but nothing appeared in it)

3) Startup using Windows ME Startup Disk (to try and uninstall Windows ME and go 
back to Windows 98) - Result: Can't access uninstall file (uninstal.exe).

Any suggestions????

ok so i was gonna make another thread till i found this 1 heres wat i had down, its basically the same problems but in 98 se, and it has a window that pops up saying illegal operation and the program titled is explorer, i think its spyware, cuz i had other programs performing illegal operations at completely random times, not only that i couldnt use IE, but it didnt concern me cuz i use fire fox when i rebooted my computer tonite, start up came, and right after the start up sound plays it says "explorer has performed an illegal operation" then u click close and it just sits there, i checked wat was on ctrl alt delete thingy, and it was completely blank, i left it sit for about 20 mins and nothing happen, just sat there, with my desktop back ground and nothing else, no icons, no start menu task bar nothing, so i rebooted it with the start up disk, and same thing happend, i tried booting it with the 98se disk too and nothing happen, im just wondering if there is any way i can prevent this? possibly a file i can put on floppy, from this computer that sum1 has and run the computer with it on there, cuz i have like 900 important files i need to keep, thanks
