Gateway PC Conundrum

This is the second Gateway Performance 1400 that I have looked at and is the second
one that has stumped me. For some reason, this PC continues to freeze. This PC's
owner thinks it could be software related but I do not agree. I say this because
I have scandisk on my boot disk to run it without having windows loaded and it even
froze up when this was running. I have tested the memory using memtest86, and the
customer also told me he just replaced the processor to see if that was the culprit,
which in my experience is useless if you don't replace the motherboard as well.
Anyhow, he has a Gateway Performance 1400 with the original board, two sticks of
64mb ram and two sticks of 256mb ram (again, all fine). I tried doing the windows
updates and driver updates, including the bios, but still no luck on solving the
problem. Any ideas?
