When I insert an audio CD into the CDRom, I get an error that says: "Windows cannot 
access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions 
to access the item." 

Data CDs work fine. Only audio CDs produce this error. 

I am the only user on this computer, so I should have permission to access everything. 

I also can't burn audio CDs. But when I try, I don't get the error, it just ends 
up failing. 

Suggestions please.

(check or uncheck the box) and try it again. The burning issue is most likely a buffer under run, try lowering the speed during burning in the burn program (assuming that your hardware is intact and functioning correctly). .
