Hi, I dont know if this is a common problem but my system restore tool seems to have gone and done one. I can't find it under my Accessories and doesn't appear when I search my computer. It was there a couple of days ago and now I can't find it! I have installed a few programs since then, namely ZoneAlarm,Adaware SE,Force 2.0 (fortran77 compiler), Panicware pop-up stopper, sybot search and destroy and Advanced Uninstaller Pro 2004. Are these liikely to have caused the problem, and how do I get my system restore program back?! I will appreciate any advice. Cheers

just by chance, have you tried it in safe mode? and, really, with those programs, i really do not think any of them would be the cause of this, you can also try to search through Windows ME Fix's by Jack Gulley to see if anything there might be of help. good luck. ;-)

go to msconfig, i believe there is a box there for launch system restore. see if
statemgr is tick in msconfig, if not tick it, click apply, click ok, reboot. restore
will NOT run with statemgr unticked.

Thanks for your suggestions Joe, I did try what you suggested and had a look through the website but I couldn't find anything. Now I come to think of it I downloaded a windows update in response to a warning about losing my restore point capabilities if I didn't download it. I think I was downloading Media Player 9 or something and then something popped up with one of those Q reference numbers spouting some bob about downloading an update. Do you think that may have interfered with it?

Hi Brian, Thanks for your suggestions. I went into msconfig and made sure all the boxes were ticked, which they were, although I didn't see a folder or and entry called statemgr. I remembered I downloaded a windows update that might of upset my system restore, could this have been likely? It was specifically an update to prevent me actually losing the very function I lost. If only I had system restore! This is why I never used to bother with updates, I don't trust em.

go to windows, system, restore, click on RSTRUI.EXE, see what you get, statemgr could
have been removed from the proper run key in the registry, if the restore components
are still there you could put it back in. but see what you get first from double
clicking RSTRUI.EXE.

what do i know? i doubt an update removed statemgr entry. more probably a registry
cleaner or some program you ran.

i don't understand why users use such programs as this one>

Panicware pop-up stopper. maybe this one caused it> Advanced

Uninstaller Pro 2004. i used one registry cleaner once and the

stupid thing removed my msconfig entry for systray. i put it back in

manually into the registry which made it show up in msconfig again.

Hi. Thanks for your comments. Firstly, there was no box labelled system restore in the msconfig file to tick. I've even tried looking for the RSTRUI.EXE file but as far as my computer is concerned it's never heard of that or statemgr. And there isn't a restore file in my system folder. If you do a search for 'system restore' it comes back with sod all. It prob was that uninstaller that caused the problem. As for the panicware pop up stopper, I thought it may be a decent pop-up blocker. It had a high enough popularity on download.com that I figured the herd has better instincts than me in what's useful and whats not! To be honest this comp isn't used much and I've never used system restore on it before. But now I don't have it I miss it. Thanks for your comments tho.

advanced uninstaller has a registry cleaner, optimizer, as well as a registry backup, to ask why is a choice of the user/owner and not of the question entailed here, ccleaner is by far a more "dangerous" choice of using if the user is not familiar with it! a lot of damaged has been done by inadequate knowledge of the product!
