How do I disable/prevent multiuser for Windows ME so that I'm the ONLY person who can use my computer?

I do not want my roommate to use my computer. She has her own computer, but is too cheap to pay $20 (between the two of us - we live on campus) a month for cable service, so after I got cable service, she started to use my computer without my knowledge! She's virus-prone too! I didn't enable multiuser. However, when the password dialog box pops up, all I have to do is either (1) click "cancel" and everything will load like normal, or (2) simply type in a new username and password and everything will load like normal. So how can I prevent her from using my computer?! I haven't been able to find any useful information, even on the Microsoft website. Everything is about how to disable the password dialog box!

bios password,(but for sure someone will respond and tell you

there are workarounds (lucky thing too) but it can be a start, but

be very careful, you had better know hot to "fix it" in case you

forget or mistype it or else you will get stuck. i saw something else

to add to it too but first try the bios password. but anyway there

are free antivirus tools.

Try this:

Force Users to Logon to Windows (Windows 95/98/Me)

That was actually the first thing I tried, but somehow that did nothing.

This sounds very interesting and I was just about to try it until I reached the bottom of the page! "Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. We cannot guarantee that problems resulting from modifications to the registry can be solved. Use the information provided at your own risk." Thanks though. I may try it! :)

what do you mean that did nothing? when i used a bios password

on my dell a dos like screen comes up asking for the password, you

have three chances to enter the correct password , if not the

computer shuts down. unless you mean your roomate got into the

computer anyway? if you do have a bios pass word entered the

next thing to do is to disable windows from booting to safe mode

or dos. so which is it? there are ways to reset the bios passwords.

You can do what my Sister does. She takes the Cat5 Cable to work with her, so her Kid won't get online when he is home alone. The Kid is to cheap to buy his own cable, so it seems to work for now.

One, if she's virus prone, i doubt she's smart enough to reset the BIOS, and two, setting a bios user password should do something. Maybe you only set a supervisor password, which protects the bios settings, not use of the computer. Also, make sure it's set to boot from the hardrive first, that way she can't access the computer with a bootable cd or floppy.

I know... With my old computer (back in the 90s), that was what happened when I set a bios password. But now, I've set the bios password, and for some reason it doesn't ask for a password at all except for when I want to enter setup. Maybe I've missed some steps?

Haha... I've thought of that. But that won't stop her from messing around with my computer. :p

I did set BOTH the bios password AND supervisor password. In fact, I've tried setting the bios password more than once, because it's not working and I thought I didn't save before exiting. I don't know why it's not asking for a password upon startup. My old computer did that when I set a bios password. ???

I did. And I just figured out why it wasn't working! :) There's this tab - "security," and it was set to "setup" instead of "system." I changed it to "system" and now it asks for a password right after the memory test. :) Thanks for all your help!

Maybe you need to update the BIOS, or the BIOS isn't working right... That is weird. If you had Linux installed, you can set a password on the bootloader, but I think there should be a way to put a password on the windows bootloader too. You could also try just taking the cable modem with you when you leave, it's not too large right?

Actually, I already said that I've resolved this problem. I just forgot to set the security setting to "system" from "setup" when I was doing the BIOS setting. Thanks though. :)
