recovering from bad real dos-mode patch

I tried the Real Dos-Mode Patch for WinMe, but now I can't get my machine to get past what seems to be Autoexce.bat in startup. I tried using the Start Disc floppy, the Me upgrade cd, and the 98 recovery cd: at best I get as far as the following message: "WHILE INITIALIZING DEVICE IFSMGR: the installable file system manager cannot find the helper driver. Please be sure that IFSHLP.SYS has been installed. SYSTEM HALTED" Using different approaches, I've gotten to the screen offering the various statup mode options, but from there I can get no further than the above message, after which power must be disconnected. I can't afford to lose data by reformatting. Any suggestions on how to crack into Windows without file loss? Can I alter the Start Disc? If reformatting imperative, can I first stick the hard drive into my other computer (running XP) and extract the data I need to keep? I've tried to visit Manifest-Destiny.net (the providers of this patch), but the site seems closed down. Any and all suggestions welcome. In offering help, please keep in mind that I am just a computer user, not a techno; my communication skill in computer tech language is at least moderately limited. Lutz
