Start Menu and Windows Explorer

I'm working on a friend's computer which is running Win ME. The main problems I am seeing are: 1. when I click on the Start menu, the button presses down and stays that way, and the menu never comes up. 2. when I open Win Explorer (or my computer), a message pops up about Active X not enabled, and I can't view any of the files. I can click the folders button and see a list of the directory structure but when I click on a certain folder, I get the Active X message and it never lets me actually see the files in that folder. I've got the Windows disk that came with the PC, but I'm not sure which utility to run to fix this problem without loosing data on the hard drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Have identical problem - also program icons are gone & only system icons (My Computer, Recycle, etc.) remain but do not work when brought up - i.e. Recycle shows nothing.

I actually figured this out yesterday after I posted. I booted into safe mode (keep hitting F8 during boot up). Then open My Computer, go to c:\windows\system (I think that's where I found it) and run the executable for registry repair. Worked like a charm!!
