Disk Defagmenter problem

Hi,
My disk defragmenter won't go past 2% when defraging.It starts with checking for
errors on drive but when it gets to 2% it goes back to 0% and starts again.
I can run complete defrag in safe mode just not in normal mode.
The machine did have a number of viruses and spyware on board but all have been removed
with up to date tools.
I can run a througher scandisk in both safe mode and normal mode all fine there.
Any help much appreciated.

XP OPERATING SYSTEM
The ME defrag has never been any good at coping with other programs running in the
background. Diskeeper usually doesn't have this problem. Try using Diskeeper Lite
and you should see an immediate improvement.

Try running your Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode. I have had this problem and this
usually clears it up.

See:  page for information on removing a few default Windows ME startup
programs that will help Defragment run without starting so often.
Keep in mind, anything that causes writes to the disk drive while Defragmenter
is running will cause it to restart. A firewall program logging hits or any Spyware/ADware
downloading junk will cause these restarts. Most of these types of programs are not
loaded in Safe Mode.
