I was given a Gateway computer that runs Windows Me. It is not hooked up to the internet. It was working fine and now it wont boot up. It stays on the white screen that says Mirosoft windows Me. I tried to start in safe mode but that gave me a message saying "System Error Windows cannot read read from drive C" please help as it is my daughters' computer. The only programs that I have installed are The Sims Deluxe and Putt-Putt travels through time (which both are installed on my computer). Both games worked just fine then we shut the computer down. please help

XP OPERATING SYSTEM

If you have a Windows ME bootdisk put it in the A: drive and start the computer. At the 1st screen choose Minimal Boot and allow the prompt to load. Then type: A:\>scandisk /all /surface , and press Enter. (This will take about 1 hour per 10 Gigabytes of drive-space.) If you don't have a Windows ME bootdisk then go to thisd site BOOTDISKS Downoad the Windows ME OEM image file to another computer and double-click on the file. You'll need a formatted floppy diskette. Also download DELINDEX.BAT Copy the Delindex file to the newly made bootdisk and (before you type the scandisk command) type: A:\>delindex run , and press Enter. This will clear a lot of the junk files off the system and probably allow you to boot to Safe Mode where you can then run: defrag. It might also be that the logo.sys file which is the white ME screen which you are seeing, is corrupt. So look for logo.sys and delete the file. If you have the Windows Start-Up sound on turn it OFF as corruption of this file can prevent starting as well.

Thank you. I tried what you said and that wouldnt work. so then I went into safe mode and when i got the system error message I put the disk you have me make and kept pushing cancel then the computer scanned the C drive for errors, and then it brought up my windows Me desktop with the help and support page opened. Let me see what it says and if this can help me. Thank you

Good luck. Is the A: drive not working properly then, or is the boot sequence not set right with the floppy drive as first boot device, and the hard drive as second boot device? Do you know how to check the BIOS settings? Are you also using ME on your computer?

ok this is where i'm at. I tried the scandisk thing and I get a message saying " scandisk cannot read from the last cluster on drive C. this cluster is either damaged, or your system is not configured properly. Drive C may need to have logical block addressing(LBA) enabled to work properly, or its disk partition may be incorrectly marked as a non-LBA partition. data loss can occur if your LBA setting or disk partition type for this drive is misconfigured. check your computer's BOIS setup utility. If you are sure your drive is configured correctly, click continue to have scandisk check drive C for errors. continue or stop?

Have you entered the BIOS Settings on the ME computer to see if LBA is enabled? Take a look at the boot screen to find the correct key, or key combination, to enabe you to enter the BIOS settings. Just how old is this computer and how old is the drive? If you know the make of the drive I would go to the drive manufacturer's site and download their drive diagnostic diskette and give the drive a thorough check. The damaged part of the drive can either be repaired, or the drive can be re-partitioned so as not to use it, or, and in my exerience with older '98 & ME computers fitting a new drive with a speed of 7,200 rev/min and a drive cache of 8 Mb will generally improve the system, especially if the drive is carefully partitioned and correctly formatted. For example defrag will run four times faster with an 8 Mb cache as opposed to a 2 Mb cache. Partitioning helps when making a drive image and backups. If the rest of your daughter's hardware and software is compatible and the system has a good enough processor and enough RAM you might then consider clean installing XP. (The Maxtor drive I used for ME failed after four years use.)
