Maxtor 40GB H/D giving me 6.97 GB Why??

I have two problems really but the first being the harddrive I recently brought,
I had brought a 40GB harddrive and when I set it up it only gave me 6.97GB why is
this?
I am running windows ME and I do realise you never get the full amount as quoted
on the box but I did expect more than 6.97GB out of 40GB, is there any way I can
change the amount of disk space on my drive through windows?
Windows didn't find the new hardware automatically I had to do it manually, is it
a partition problem?
Anyone who can give me some advice on this problem and how to sort out this problem
would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks for your help in advance and I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Ricky

Could be because your system BIOS is real old. The older versions of BIOS (system
board hardware) do not support larger disk drives. There are several "limits" that
have been a problem. Most likely your system BIOS only "supports" disk drives up
to 32GB and your system board BIOS is limiting Windows FDISK from seeing the drive
size by only giving it access to the MOD 32 size. (40GB MOD 32GB = 8GB)
First step is to look up your system board and its BIOS version at the system
board or system makers web site and see what size disk drives it supports. Then see
if they have a BIOS upgrade to support larger disk drives. Most have upgrades to
support 64GB limit, or larger.
Another option is to down load or install drivers provided by the disk drive manufacture.

i had the same problem once with my HD. i downloaded a program called Partition Magic
and it showed me a huge amout of drive space was unused. i just had to make a few
changes and got the space back. there are many programs like this one. try searching
the web.
And yea, the hd will show u lower disk space then it actually says, but the diffrence
is only of about a gig or 2.

Here is My advice whgich presents the Logical steps to take.
First make sure you have Jumpers for master slave set correctly on all drives, and
that the master drive is always connected to the END of the cable while slave is
connected in the middle
Second, make sure you have proper BIOS support for the drive. Usually the easiest
way to do this is to enter in the BIOS setup, and select AUTO for that drive. Some
BIOSes you must also put the LBA selection in manually or select AUTO as well.
Third, windows SHOULD detect the drive automatically once it is properly configured.
Notes> if your BIOS date shows something older than 1999, your system may support
a maximum sixe of 8 Gig. IF that is the case, you can install Maxtor's drive installation
utilities which should be available on the maxtor web site. * I think you said the
drive was a MAxtor. I have a system with a BIOS date of 1997 and it supports larger
than 8 Gig drives. However too , I ALWAYS use the MAxtor Utility on my Maxtor drives,
because I frequently move drives from system to system. When I move them, I have
no problem reading them on whatever system.
Some versions of the maxtor utilities also include diagnostics, to see if you hjave
a BIOS incompatibility or whether you need the software. At least, they check compatibility
and format the drive usually ensuring greatest compatibility.
