Normally caused by an error detected by Windows ME that it thinks is a
disk drive hardware error, such as a crashed disk sector. This is its only way to
force running of a Through mode ScanDisk. And this will not go away until
ScanDisk is allowed to scan the whole disk in Through mode and all detected errors
are "corrected". So "let it run".
Recommendation is to boot with the Windows ME startup diskette and run the DOS
version of ScanDisk C: first and run its surface test. It will give you a
visible indication of where any Bad blocks are on the disk drive. If that
runs OK, then try the Windows ME Scandisk again just to be sure. Then set ScanDisk
to the Normal mode and run it one time.
If more than one or two errors show up in the DOS mode ScanDisk, it is time to
start looking for a replacement disk drive. Go for a 120GB drive, as any thing over
137GB is not supported by Windows ME and can cause problems if not setup correctly.
