The Icons on the task bar in the "Quick Launch" and in the "SysTray" sections
will only Maximize or launch that application, not exit or minimize it. You must
use options in that program to exit the program from the desktop (its icon remains
in its section of the task bar). Once a Quick Launch is used, that copy of the program
can be minimized to it program place holder on the tool bar.
The task bar also shows active programs on the disktop with a program place holder
and does allow programs to be minimized to it. (These are not icons.) Any program
that has been minimized to its program place holder on the task bar can be RESTORED
to the Desktop by clicking on it. However, the clicking of the program on the task
bar to minimize it back to the task bar is a program function of that program
and its window. If that program does not support the function, it will not happen.
There are not Registry setting that control this.
This minimize back to the tool bar is a "command message" sent to the program.
If that program does not receive the message because some other program is hung and/or
corrupting the the command message chain, then it will not minimize.
Several programs are known to cause this type of problem. Example: Apple's Quick
Time program QTTASK.exe use to play QuickTime movies in Internet Explorer can cause
IE windows to not minimize and hang for periods of time. Conflicting ADware and
Spyware programs also corrupt this message chain causing programs not to minimize.
