When you power it on, before the initial Windows ME splash screen comes up, press and hold the F8 key or the Ctrl key. May take several tries, but this should give you the Windows "Boot Menu" with several options listed. Select the "Safe Mode" option with the keyboard. This will boot the system into a low resolutition screen mode, where you will not have Internet access or access to the CD-Rom drives. But you will be able to run your installed Anti-Virus program, and any installed programs like Ad-Aware SE or Spybot S&D to check for Malware programs. From Safe Mode, you can also RUN - MSCONFIG and go to its Startup tab and check the Startup programs for any that should not be there. You also want to run the System Tools - Disk CleanUp utility while in Safe Mode, along with starting Interent Options from the Control Panel and clearing IE's Temporary Interent Files. This helps remove some Malware that might be on the system. If you have a working system to use, download a copy of the McAfee Stinger program and copy it to diskette first. Then in safe mode, you can run it from the diskette. It does a scan for the 40 or so most common active Virus that cause major problems like you have and can automatically remove them while in Safe Mode. Hopefully between McAfee Stinger, your installed AV and other programs, and by disabling suspect program in your Startup List, you will be able to boot the system and use it well enough to complete the clean up of the disk drive.
