Index missing in Windows Help ?

For some reason ,in my O/S WindowsME when I browse my way to the built in help that
comes with the O/S and click on the index ,the listing along the lefthand side of
your screen ,which usally has a list of differant topics you can click on ,for help
,is now blank ,it is white with a small placeholder icon in the upper left hand corner
(looks like a muti-colored face profile) and the rest of it has no subjects listed
? I have tried searchig the Microsoft Knowledge Base ,numerous online support forums, google
searches ,and so far no joy .Except for format and reinstall ,something I do not
want to do for this problem ,no one seems to have any idea on how to troublehoot
this problem ? Perhaps the # of the .cab file that Windows Help resides in ,at this
point I wil be happy to find any kind of help reguarding this problem !
Thank You Nick

Sometimes the easiest thing to do is do a Install in Place. Take a look at this article.
Good luck!!

Problem is that the Help is a collection of over 50 files, including executable
files, XML files and Java Script files, any of which could be missing ordamaged.
Most are in the C:\Windows\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR folder and it's sub folders. But not
all of them. Some are in the WIN_16.CAB and others in WIN_18.CAB, WIN_19.CAB and
WIN_22.CAB.
