Windows Me will not run for me

Hello, I would appreciate any advice on this matter.I have checked the forum and couldnt see any answer. My problem is this, when i start my computer, windows ME initially starts up,and then i get the options to start ME in safe mode etc. When i do this, the computer just restarts and takes me again to the same process. This happens all the time. I have used a boot disk to start and used scandisk/all and also scanreg/restore,these make no difference when i restart, just i get the same safe mode options again. I was advised by a computer shop to just install windowsXP,i dont really want to do this. No,i dont have the original windows ME disks as this was a second hand computer. Iam prepared to buy a copy of windows ME and re-install,if that is possible. But i just wanted to know if there was anything i could do to save the current situation before investing in a copy of ME. I hope someone can help me or provide some suggestions. Thanks for your time, Kevin.

Try and get your hands on an ME disk. Borrow one if you know someone who has one. While you're at it have them make you an ME startup floppy from their system and if possible make you a copy of their CD. Tell them you don't want their CD key number, just a copy of the CD. Or, find one cheap on Ebay. Run the System File Checker (SFC). The command is "sfc /scannow" (without quotes of course). If it finds any missing or corrupted files it will replace them. Hopefully your system has a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) sticker on it somewhere. That's the original installation key number. If worse come to worse and you have to reinstall, any ME disk will work with that number.

Hi Larry, thank you for your initial advice. I obtained a copy of the winME disk and went to install it.The scandisk opened and checked the system and reported all was ok. However when i continued with the process to re-install i got the message: Standard mode:fault outside of ms-dos extender EC=0000 CS=031f IP=28D0 AX=00A0 BX=0080 CX=8080 DX=9FCO SI=0080 DI=5830 BP=0136 DS=0277 ES=0317 SS=027F SP=01A8 I dont know what that is at all?? Also the command sfc /scannow is not recognised by dos when i use a boot disk. I really dont know what the problem is.

I don't know what all those error codes are either. Are you able to boot to a normal desktop with the CD? If so, try running the sfc /scannow command from the Run command.
