Disabled Virus in Restore Archive

I know how to delete files in the restore archive but the fix uses defrag and in order for me to run the defrag I have to run scan disk. I can't seem to make it through the scan disk...I get an error msg that says "Windows or another program had been writing to this drive". I've closed everything in the start up and this doesn't seem to help. I've been at this for at least 12 hours. Anybody have any suggestions. Greatly appreciated!

Tip: Run a free scan for common Windows errors ad

Turn off System Restore, then boot to Safemode, and run your utilities. When done, Boot back to Normal Windows, and turn on System Restore Again.

It actually made it through the scan disk (after hours) on its own before I got your reply. Thank you & I'll keep your reply for future use.

As I've said many times in this forum, the Windows defrag program is a complete waste of time.I use DiskeeperLite, a freeware program which defrags a disk in a couple of minutes even if the computer is still in use .There are other good third party defrag programs , just don't end up paying for any as the freeware versions are good.
