My printer jams and slips

I do not see printer messages in this forum. I will however try. My Epson Stylus color 600 printer for the second time, has jammed, slipped and prints the lower part of page to the right side, and makes a loud metal sound as it continues to move, until I shut it off. Any ideas. I mentioned second time because the first time it happened, it mysteriously went away and worked O.K. for several days. Help Elmoticky

The reason you don't see printer questions is because this is a Windows Forum, not a Hardware Forum. Home printers are disposable products though, so continues jams means it is probably worn out.

Steve: After I posted "My printer jams and slips" I logged on to fixyourownprinter.com with my same complaint, but added that my jams and slips did not involve paper jams, rather, just grinding noise and loud humming sounds. I learned "there", that my problem could be one of several, "but not" a disposable one. I cleaned the cartridge "rod", where the cartridges slide back and forth and found them to be sooted black from dried ink(cleaned them), and oiled the rod thoroughly. problem solved, for now. Thanks Steve. Elmoticky, Sorry for using this forum for my printer problem.

Just a note.. If you have one of the Epson models known to blow an ink tube and
splash ink all over the place, it's only a matter of time before it stops altogether.
If this is the case, be ready to replace it... Normally, no printer should be getting
ink on the slide bar.. When it does, it usually means there is a problem.. (Been
there, especially on those Epsons)

Dear C.K., Thank you for your caring advise with respect to printer problem. First, let me tell you that perhaps you might not have read my last post addressing that my problem was solved with a mere lubricating of some functioning parts of the printer. Second, you do not identify the type of printer that you refer to as: "those that splash ink all over the place", let me inform you that my printer has never done that. My problem, actually as described by Espson Service Manuel only needed a bit of oil on certain spots. Everything is now O.K. However, your message is greatly appreciated, and Thanks Again Elmoticky

You said, "found them to be sooted black from dried ink".. When ink is found on
the slide bar, it's a classic sign that Epsons are throwing ink (something they don't
tell you). A Google search would find Epson models, including yours (to a lesser
extent) that do this, generally after the warranty period expires. Your model, as
well as the 800's and C series (and others) have had problems as they all use the
same style of pump and tubing system to clear and flush (pull) ink through the heads.
As the waste ink pad in the bottom becomes full, it can splash ink back up into
the mechanism, even if the tubing hasn't come apart. (Mine 600, 800 and C80 did
both after about a year) Oiling the bar from the outside helps but the ink is water
based and some oils may gum up again anyway. Cleaning the bar usually does the most
good with an application of plastic safe, hobby grease is the best I have found,
(and is the closest to what Epson originally used). Generally to properly service
the bar, means that it has to be removed and the bushing throughly cleaned and lubricated.

At some point all Epson printers are programmed to stop printing after so many hours
(startup and cleanings) as they figure that the waste ink pads in the bottom of the
printer are full. At that point you either disgard the printer or, if you know how
to tear the printer apart, you can replace the pads and clean out the waste ink and
reset the printer. All of this info is available online if you ever need it! ;-)

Dear C.K.: Your 1/22/07 message is not only very informative, but also very appreciated. You are 100 percent correct in your analysis with respect to my "found them to be sooted black from dried ink" post that you responded to. When i wrote "sooted black from dried ink", i actually ran a cotton from a Q-stick gently over the cartridge guide shaft. The result, a stain of black but not a stain that could be seen as if a leak was spewing ink somewhere. You appear to be interested in printers, as i have been told that this site is solely for computers, which is agree. So i went to fixyourownprinter.com and if you have not been there, i strongly recommend that you go there. When the window opens, scroll down to number six, Epson printers. At this site you will find a Epson Service Manuel that shows you everything there is about the printer. Oh, before i forget, if you are interested in the free service manuel click:http://www.wimtv.be/techniforum/files/smstc600.pdf. Thanks again C.K.......Elmoticky
