Start Menu

When I booted up my computer today all of the programs in my start menu are gone
as well as all of my windows setup components. I was able to get the components
back (but not on the start menu) but all are reading 0.0 mb's which I assume is because
I don't have any shortcuts anymore.
I ran a search for *.LNK files and found a lot of my programs in the C:\Windows\ApplicationData\InternetExplorer\QuickLaunch
could those be the same missing from start up? and some Microsoft Office under C:\MicrosoftOffice\Office\ShortcutBar\Office
could those be the same missing from start up as well? Does anyone know how I can
move them back or just restore the registry. A system restore did not do it.
How about how to get the Windows Set Up Components back? I use the System Tools
a lot! I found a few downloads for this but all were for XP.

Since I'm not having any luck.... If I use system restore it won't go back to December
nor can I use DOS to get there. When I search the date that I restored last and
was happy with the system it was 12/5/06 and I can find this application extension
rstrs2l.da2
located in
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RESTORE
can I use this and how????

Kelly, I'm not sure what you mean by "...can you use that somehow". Are you referring
to the restore point? You can try restoring your system to that date, if you want
to go back that far, but there's no guarantee that'll solve the problem.
Depending on what caused all those shortcuts to disappear, restoring a registry backup
may work. That's the only problem, i.e. shortcuts missing on your start menu, correct?
There's not much time though, since Windows only creates 5 backups by default. That
means there needs to be a "good" backup dated prior to when this problem arose. In
Windows ME you need a floppy boot disk (startup disk) in order to access those backups.
If you don't have one, you can create one.
To create a disk: Get a blank floppy diskette, go into Add/Remove programs. Click
Startup Disk tab, then stick the floppy disk in drive and choose Create disk. Then
boot with the startup disk in the floppy drive.
At the A:\> prompt, type: C: scanreg /restore then press Enter. Choose a backup
with the word Started, dated before this happened. Follow the prompts to restore
the backup.
You should get a message that Windows successfully restored the registry. Then CTRL_ALT_DEL
to get back into Windows.

Carol,
Unfortunately I missed the 5 default window and can't get back using scanreg or system
restore.
I know my post was sketchy but I restored my sytem in December in that created a
folder and in that folder is the application (see 2nd post) that I'm asking if I
can use to get my system back to what it was then.
I believe that I lost all of my accessories & programs on the start menu by deleting
a program and then running a registry cleaner. I've learned a lesson there!

By the way....I'm searching the date in windows explorer and I believe that file
folder is a backup of the December system restore that I did.

I don't understand what that application extension is you're referring to, Kelly.
That's not the System Restore, but I don't know what that Restore folder is there.
I'm not familiar enough with ME to recognize that folder, but it's not possible to
access the System Restore folder, because it's protected volume. The only way to
do anything with a previous restore point, is to choose to restore your computer
to that date. Have you considered that? Of course, any changes you've made since
would be gone.
You have a real dilemma you're dealing with, and I can only suggest you try a repair/reinstall
of ME to try to fix things. You'd need to upgrade IE again to IE 6 and reinstall
updates. Sorry I can't be more help, but check out Jack Gulley's instructions here:

Carol,
Thank you for taking so much time with me.
I tried the reinstall and after it checks my system and the installation wizard starts
I freeze up. When I ctrl-alt-delete it tells me Suwin not responding. I've googled
that and although a lot of people have this problem I can't find an answer.
I know my comments on the restore folder are confusing as I've confused myself.
I restored my system on 12/5/06 and as a result this restore folder showed up in
my windows explorer and that appl. file I mentioned is part of the folder. I wasn't
sure if I could use that or not. I know at one point I asked if I could delete that
file and the answer I got was "if your system seems to be running fine since the
restore" so I thought that comment meant I could use it if things weren't running
correctly.
I think for the time being I'll just have to chalk it up to a loss and work without
my accessories file on the start menu. It's not the end of the world just hard to
find things I use often like defrag & scandisk.
Again, thank you!

I wish I could be more help, but you can create your own shortcuts on the start menu,
including adding folder like Accessories.
You'll just need to locate the applications, i.e. defrag, scandisk, etc. in order
to add them. In case you're not familiar with adding shortcuts to your Start Menu...
Right click your Taskbar and choose Properties. Under Start Menu tab, choose Customize
then Add - Browse and go from there. There's a point where you can Create a folder
and give it name you want, then add the apps you want included. It may be a bit tedious
but probably worth the extra time.

Carol,
Any chance you would happen to know all of the subfolder and their components (ie:
Accessories/SystemTools/DiskDefragmentor) for Windows ME? I can't seem to come up
with those anywhere.
Thanks again for taking the time to try and help me it is greatly appreciated!

You're welcome, Kelly. I could be more help, if I were running ME, 98, or another
9x system. I've been running XP for a couple years now, so I don't know what all
is there. Some items are similar, though.
There's Accessibility folder, and Communications (which you don't really need, i.e.
New Connection Wizard, and if I recall a Dial up Networking shortcut, etc.)
I have an Entertainment folder that includes Sound Recorder, Sound Volume and WMP
Player, so those are the same. I also deleted quite a few shortcuts there. I tend
to remove items I don't have any use for. You can add anything you want there. Can
you look in Windows Setup and add items listed there?
As for System Tools, that list could be long... Character Map, Disk Cleanup, Disk
Defragmenter, Scandisk, Notepad, System Information, System Restore, and is that
where Paint is usually listed?
I could start a new thread for you, just for this purpose, and request more input
from other ME users, if you want me to.

Carol,
Thanks for your generous offer but I'll try it on my own first.
Again, thank you so much for all of your advise!
