I cannot boot up my system. I get this error message... Cannot find SYSTEM.INI .
Boot with Emergency Boot Disk and type SCANREG /RESTORE.
Can anyone please help me!?
Does this mean that i will lose all my important information and saved files?
If i cannot find the emergency boot disk how do i go about getting one?
Any help would be greatly apprechaited.
Thank You.

Tony, don't panic. Your data is safe. The error message only means that you have
a (temporary) problem in loading Windows. Probably it can be cured easily.
Do a Google search to find yourself a start-up disk on the internet. You want a boot
disk for Win ME. There are several sites that you can download one from, in the form
of a program that will format a blank 3.5" floppy for you as a bootable disk.
Use it to start your system, and carry out the instruction to go to the C: prompt
and there type the command: SCANREG /RESTORE
(Note that there is NO space between the / and the RESTORE in this command)
This command will run a program (the SCANREG.EXE program) that allows you to install
one of several backup copies of your system files. Windows usually keeps 5 backup
copies, each one dated, and these normally include SYSTEM.INI, so restoring an earlier
backup should cure your problem.
Choose to restore one that's dated BEFORE the problem arose. Make sure it's one that
is marked as having been SUCCESSFUL in previously starting your system. If in doubt,
choose the one with the oldest date (which will normally be dated 5 days ago).

If you only want to restore your System.ini then start your computer up in Safe Mode.
Hold down the Ctrl key on startup and select Safe Mode from the DOS menu.
Go into Windows Explorer. Look in Windows\Sysbckup I think its the same as Win98.
Look for *.cab files and open them with WinZip. You should see System.dat, User.dat,
System.ini and Win.ini files in there, just extract System.ini to the Windows folder.
Then do a restart.

Hi Tony.
No you won't loose any work that you've made you were originally talking about the
System.ini was missing, that is how I would retrieve System.ini.
Do a search in your Windows folder or *.cab. These will normally be rb000.cab to
rb005.cab in your Sysbckup folder, depending on how many backups you have. Just open
any cab file with WinZip and extract System.ini to your Windows folder.

Tony has not posted again, but as he could not boot to Windows, he won't be able
to run WinZip or access any .CAB files.
A possible solution to his problem, at the DOS prompt, is this command:
SCANREG /FIX
The computer may take more than 10 minutes to execute this command, and may even
appear to freeze. THIS IS NORMAL. Just wait patiently.

You can create a standard SYSTEM.INI by following the instructions on this page:
