Upgrading to XP

I have a Dell Dimension 4300, 1.5Ghz Pentium 4 machine, 40 gig harddrive. I justed
updated the RAM from 384Mb to 512Mb. It currently runs Win ME. I recently purchased
XP Home upgrade edition but have not yet installed it after hearing this upgrade
route is often problematic .... What issues are usually encountered after this update
roue is taken ? Also, does this upgrade route invalidate the ME license such that
if I needed to reinstall XP at a later date, I could no longer do so since ME is
now invalid ? (Got this idea from Vista upgrade which invalidates the XP license).
If that is the case, I will get an XP full install version instead. As a home
user, what is recommended, XP Home to XP Professional. My aim is to get another year
or 2 out of the machine until I really need to upgrade.

You are more likely to find a solution to your problem if you post the query on the
XP forum, where there are more likely to be people with actual experience of upgrading
to XP.
Users of the ME forum are, by definition, those who have not as yet upgraded to XP
(and perhaps never will).

Your machine will run XP fine, but I would definitely reccomend a clean install over
the upgrade route. This can be done with an XP upgrade disk, but ONLY if you have
your ME disk handy (XP won't "invalidate" it), but it has to be a MS disk, not an
OEM restore disk. If your computer came with ME installed and one of these restore
disks, the upgrade route may be your only option unless you can borrow a Microsoft/non
OEM 98/ME disk from someone. The first thing to do is to save any documents/photos/files
you want to keep by burning them to a CD, emailing them to yourself, etc. Also make
sure you have the CDs for any applications like Office, Works, etc. so you can reinstall
them after you reformat your drive and install XP. After doing these things, follow
the direction at the following site and you will end up with a clean, new install
of XP on a properly formatted drive (4K clusters instead of 512 byte clusters, and
NTFS vs. FAT32 file system): http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Just to add to what Larry posted, if you do have an OEM disk, you might, I say might,
be able to use a Win98SE disk for the verification step in the install. I suggest
you go the the XP forum and ask this question before you wipe the HDD!

Walter,
I have a Dell Dimension 4100, 1 Ghz machine that's similar to yours (just a little
older). It also has Win ME.
I've considered upgrading my 4100 to Win XP too but decided against. The machine
runs just fine as it is so I don't want to risk screwing things up. Heard too many
nightmares about upgrading.
I've also got two newer Dell's, plus my wife's got one. All three came with XP-Pro
pre-installed. They all run fine with XP but I don't see that big of a difference
in normal day-to-day use. I still use my old 4100 more than the new ones even though
it has a slow processor and less memory.
Unless you've had big problems with your system I'd suggest returning XP. You'll
save yourself some money and avoid potential headaches.
Ken
