Ive done it again...hour glass icon

most problems I get on the pc are self-inflicted..this is no exception. I was half
way through downloading Stopzilla and decided it was going on too long . I had two
or three attempts to stop it downloading before it finally did just that. Then I
cleared out all the files I could find associated with it. Now I have a really annoying
intermitant problem. When I return to desk top after surfing and either click on
shutdown or even Int explorer again...the hour glass icon kicks in and no action.
This does not happen every time. When I try Ctrl Alt Del it comes up with 'Explorer'
After a long wait the problem may clear but not always. Ive virus checked and also
used Spybot.Please help .... John.
ps I dont have Windows Me but have a shrewd idea that it doesnt make any difference
in this case.

If you're not running Windows ME, you need to post on the appropriate forum. There's
a forum for every Windows OS on this site, so why are you here?

Carol.. sheer desperation I guess and I apologise.
I did post this problem on win 98(the correct forum) but solicited no replies and
despite much searching on line cant find anyone who has made the same stupid mistake
as me. John.

There are two obvious possibilities, and both are applicable to Win 98 and to Win
ME.
Reboot to DOS. Then issue this command at the C:> prompt:
SCANREG /RESTORE
and restore a previous good copy of the Registry dated before the problem occured.
If the problem occured more than 5 days ago, and your machine only keeps backups
for 5 days, issue this command:
SCANREG /FIX
and wait patiently! It may take MORE THAN 10 minutes. Your PC may appear to freeze,
but this is normal. Wait patiently!

Do what I said in my previous post anyway.
But it occurs to me that this symptom suggests you had done a partial download, and
the download is trying to resume. But of course it can't, because you've deleted
all the Stopzilla files. So it goes up a dead-end loop, and you're stuffed!
Do you have a download manager installed? Perhaps integrated into Internet Explorer?
That will be what's causing it to try to resume the download.
Give it the old three finger salute, and kill the download - which might be an incompletely
closed instance of Internet Explorer.
You would be best with a stand-alone download manager. Having one as a plug-in for
IE can cause problems.
