You're right, AOL's so-called tech support don't know what they're doing, for the
most part.
Yes, please do yourself a huge favor and switch ISP's, and don't let them talk you
out of it and harass you about it! They try to make it as difficult as possible and
watch your bill closely.
To eradicate AOL software from your system, takes some doing, but it's worth it.
