Regedit returns error, and 'Run' opens 'Search Results'

Hi there,
For some reason, recently, the Registry Editor (regedit) has started displaying the
following error message whenever I run it, or whenever a different program tries
to open it :
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be terminated. Quit all
programs and then restart your computer.

If the program consistently encounters problems, click the Start button, then select
Help, Troubleshooting, and 'If you have trouble running MS-DOS programs',

However... if I run 'regedit.exe' it opens, so I am assuming that there is a regedit.com
somewhere, however I am hesitant to reomve it, as I do not know much about how Windows
works... I am more familiar with DOS and OS/2

Also, whenever I use the 'Run' option on the start menu, and type a directory adress
in, it opens a blank 'Search results' page,
Any advice on how to sort this out would be appreciated
Thanks in advance,

Normally there isn't a regedit.com its Regedit.exe. have you done a search for Regedit.com?

If its in the Windows path then a com file will run before an exe file.

It doesn't look like there is,
But I'd assume seeing as it only loads if I put in the extension that there's something
else there, but I don't think that .hlp .cnt or .chm would load,

Have you tried going to Explorer and scrolling down to Regedit.exe in the Windows folder and running it from there? Any other type of file should run providing you use the Browse button to find the exact location.

hmm, running 'Regedit.com' IS opening something, odd that DIR /A /S didn't see it.

Well if you've done a search for Regedit.com and can't find anything then it must
be a hidden file. Change your Explorer settings so you can see all file types.

When the program REGEDIT.EXE returns the error message which you are experiencing,
it is time to boot to DOS and run this command at the C:> prompt:

 SCANREG /FIX

Note that there is a space BEFORE the slash, but NO space after it!

The command will attempt to repair your Windows Registry. The process will take AT
LEAST ten minutes, perhaps more. Do NOT get impatient and turn off the computer just
because nothing seems to be happening. Wait instead.

DOS programs give little in the way of feedback. The computer may sit there and appear
to do nothing, or may even appear to freeze. This is normal. Go make a cup of coffee
if you are feeling impatient.

Try re-registering your system DLL files.

Go to START > RUN and then type:

 regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Press Enter. You should see a brief message that the dll has been successfully registered.

Do the same with the following, one at a time, pressing enter after each:

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

It does no harm to re-register a working .dll file. It may be that one of them is
broken (corrupted by some other software perhaps), and if so this procedure will
repair it by re-registering it correctly.
